Contact line characteristics of liquid–gas interfaces over grooved surfaces

چکیده
Surface wetting is an important phenomenon in many industrial processes including microand nanofluidics. The wetting characteristics depend on the surface tension forces at the three-phase contact line and can be altered by introducing patterned groove structures. This study investigates the effect of the grooves on the transition in the wetting behavior between the Cassie to Wenzel regimes. The experiments demonstrate that the wettability on a patterned surface depends on the spacing factor (S = channel depth/channel width). The spacing factor influences the contact angle, contact angle hysteresis, and the transition characteristics between the Cassie and Wenzel states. It was noted that under certain conditions (S [ 1) the droplet behaved as a Cassie droplet, while exhibiting Wenzel wetting the rest of the time on the silicon microchannels tested. This criterion was used to design the groove structures on the sidewall of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell gas channel to remove the water effectively. The water coming from the land region into the gas channel is pulled by the grooves to the top wall where the airflow aided in its removal. Also, the contact angles measured on the surfaces were compared with the classical models that use wetted area, and the contact line model that uses the three-phase contact line length. It was found in our experiments that the contact line model predicts the contact angle on the patterned groove surfaces more accurately than the classical models.

Wetting phenomena on micro-grooved aluminum surfaces and modeling of the critical droplet size.
The behavior of water droplets on aluminum surfaces with parallel grooves tens of microns in width and depth is considered, and a mechanistic model is developed for predicting the critical droplet size-droplets at incipient sliding due to gravity. The critical droplet size is nearly 50% smaller on micro-grooved surfaces than on the same surface without micro-grooves. The application of existing...

In this paper, nanoscale wetting on groove-patterned surfaces is thoroughly studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The results are compared with Wenzel's and Cassie's predictions to determine whether these continuum theories are still valid at the nanoscale for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic types of surfaces when the droplet size is comparable to the groove size. A system with a liqui...
متن کاملStarTube: a tube with reduced contact line for minimized gas bubble resistance.
In this work we introduce a novel tubing design for multiphase flow that minimizes gas bubble resistance. The design termed "StarTube" has a lamella-like wall structure and was developed to prevent clogging by gas bubbles. This is performed by forcing gas bubbles into the center of the tube by capillary forces, allowing liquid to bypass in the outer grooves. It was found that the mobility of ga...

Liquid water is pushed through flow channels of fuel cells, where one surface is a porous carbon electrode made up of carbon fibers. Water drops grow on the fibrous carbon surface in the gas flow channel. The drops adhere to the superficial fiber surfaces but exhibit little penetration into the voids between the fibers. The fibrous surfaces are hydrophobic, but there is a substantial threshold ...

The interface shape separating a gas layer within a superhydrophobic surface consisting of a square lattice of posts from a pressurized liquid above the surface is computed numerically. The interface shape is described by a constant mean curvature surface that satisfies the Young-Laplace equation with the three-phase gas-liquid-solid contact line assumed pinned at the post outer edge. The numer...
