Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar for AUV Based Mine Hunting: The SENSOTEK projekt
نویسندگان
چکیده
Synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) is emerging as an ideal sensor for autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) based mine hunting and numerous other applications. By using vehicle motion to create a long synthetic array, image resolution can be increased by an order of magnitude or more compared to traditional side scan sonars. The SAS technology is also well suited for interferometric processing, facilitating very high resolution bathymetry and imaging from the same sensor. FFI, Kongsberg Simrad AS, and Simrad AS have started a joint project to develop an AUV mounted SAS system. The resulting sensor will have a resolution of 3×3 cm for both imagery and bathymetry, and area coverage rates up to 800 m/s. Integration on the HUGIN I AUV is scheduled for 2002. This paper gives a brief introduction to the principles of SAS, and describes the design, capabilities, and potential applications of the system being developed.

Bistatic Synthetic Aperture Target Detection and Imaging With an AUV
The acoustic detection and classification of completely and partially buried objects in the multipath environment of the coastal ocean presents a major challenge to the mine countermeasures (MCM) community. However, the rapidly emerging autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) technology provides the opportunity of exploring entirely new sonar concepts based on mono-, bior multi-static configuration...
متن کاملInterferometric synthetic aperture sonar for high- resolution 3-D mapping of the seabed
96 Abstract: A technique is described and demonstrated for generating high-resolution 3-D images of the objects on the seabed, combining synthetic aperture sonar with bathymetric (interferometric) processing. This has applications in surveying of oil wells, pipelines and shipwrecks, and in defence in mine hunting. It is shown that the technique is very sensitive to platform motion errors, and w...
متن کاملSignal Processing for AUV based Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar
This paper presents signal processing techniques particularly suited for interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) systems onboard Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) (or other platforms carrying high grade navigation systems). The signal processing is applied to data collected in a controlled rail experiment at Elba Island, Italy, using a wideband interferometric SAS and an Inertial Navi...
متن کاملFractal dimension based sand ripple suppression for mine hunting with sidescan sonar
Sand ripples present a difficult challenge to current mine hunting approaches. We propose a robust and adaptive method that suppresses sand ripples prior to the detection stage. The method exploits a fractal model of the seabed and the connection between: dual-tree wavelets and local, directional fractal dimension; interscale energy ratios, scale invariant frequency localised fractal dimension,...
متن کاملAssessment of Shallow Water Performance Using Interferometric Sonar Coherence
Interferometry is used for bathymetric mapping with side scan and synthetic aperture sonars. The principle is based on estimating the time difference between arrivals for two vertically displaced receivers. An important additional feature with interferometric sonar is that an estimate of the signal-to-noise ratio can be derived from the coherence between overlaid data series from the two receiv...
