Intracellular pathogens: A virus joins the movement
نویسنده
چکیده
Bacteria perform astounding feats inside host cells, demonstrating that they are able to exploit principles of cell biology that so far have eluded some of the brightest human minds. Included in their repertoire is the ability to recruit cytoskeletal elements, appropriating them to the task of bacterial locomotion. Several species of three unrelated bacterial genera — Listeria, Shigella and Rickettsia — travel through the host cell cytoplasm, fueled by actin polymerization. Recently, a virus has propelled itself onto the stage of actin-based motility studies. Vaccinia virus has now been shown to move inside host cells in association with an actin tail [1], thus imitating the behavior of its bacterial role models.

Intracellular Transport of Plant Viruses: Finding the Door out of the Cell
Plant viruses are a class of plant pathogens that specialize in movement from cell to cell. As part of their arsenal for infection of plants, every virus encodes a movement protein (MP), a protein dedicated to enlarging the pore size of plasmodesmata (PD) and actively transporting the viral nucleic acid into the adjacent cell. As our knowledge of intercellular transport has increased, it has be...
متن کاملA Capsid-Encoded PPxY-Motif Facilitates Adenovirus Entry
Viruses use cellular machinery to enter and infect cells. In this study we address the cell entry mechanisms of nonenveloped adenoviruses (Ads). We show that protein VI, an internal capsid protein, is rapidly exposed after cell surface attachment and internalization and remains partially associated with the capsid during intracellular transport. We found that a PPxY motif within protein VI recr...
متن کاملContribution of Host Intracellular Transport Machineries to Intercellular Movement of Turnip Mosaic Virus
The contribution of different host cell transport systems in the intercellular movement of turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) was investigated. To discriminate between primary infections and secondary infections associated with the virus intercellular movement, a gene cassette expressing GFP-HDEL was inserted adjacent to a TuMV infectious cassette expressing 6K₂:mCherry, both within the T-DNA borders o...
متن کاملPolymerizer-mediated intracellular movement.
Bacterial movement inside the cytoplasm is a major virulence factor in that it is necessary for efficient colonization of the infected tissues. Molecules from both the host and the pathogen present possible sites of pharmacologic intervention. Because locomoting Listeria and Shigella mimic the activated state of the leading edge of nonmuscle cells, these pathogens are powerful tools for dissect...
متن کاملAmmonium Chloride as a Potential Candidate for the Treatment and Controlling of Covid-19
Coronaviruses, pathogens with a zoonotic potential, are positive sense single-stranded RNA viruses. SARS Coronavirus-2, the cause of Covid-19 infection, is from the betacoronavirinea subfamily, which has close genomic and proteomic similarity to SARS Coronavirus-1(1). Given the genomic proximity of these two viruses, studies on SARS Coronavirus-1 can be used to control or detect SARS Coronaviru...
