ERDC/EL TR-08-10, Use of Coupled Eutrophication and Network Models for Examination of Fisheries and Eutrophication Processes

چکیده
The Corps of Engineers Integrated Compartment Water Quality Model (CE-QUAL-ICM or simply ICM) was designed to be a flexible, widely applicable eutrophication model. Ecopath with Ecosim (EWE) is a freely distributed network model supported by the Fisheries Centre, University of British Columbia. This study aimed to develop a coupling between the two models so that they could be used, in combination, to address management questions concerning the effects of nutrient load reductions on fisheries and the effects of fisheries management on primary producers. Specific objectives included: 1) comparing ICM and Ecopath representations of contemporary conditions in three regions of Chesapeake Bay; 2) comparing ICM and Ecopath representations of conditions in mid Chesapeake Bay following nutrient load reductions to levels consistent with the 1950s; and 3) comparing ICM and Ecopath representations of conditions in three regions of Chesapeake Bay resulting from increased grazing on phytoplankton by menhaden. Corresponding quantities in the two models were identified, and an ICM postprocessor was developed to facilitate the exchange of information between the two models. Significant differences were noted between the two model representations of contemporary primary production, benthic invertebrate biomass, and sediment-water organic carbon exchange. Substitution of ICM computed primary production from a 90% nutrient reduction scenario, intended to simulate loads in the 1950s, into Ecopath indicated that some higher trophic level groups (i.e., blue crab, white perch, spot, croaker, hogchoker, and catfish) cannot be supported without adjustments to their prey biomasses and diet compositions. Results of a similar procedure, intended to simulate enhanced menhaden grazing, did not require a reduction in biomasses of higher trophic levels. ERDC/EL TR-09-9 Recreating the 1950’s Chesapeake Bay: Use of a Network Model to Guide the Application of a Eutrophication Model
This report is the last of a series that documents research relating the coupling of spatially and temporally detailed eutrophication models with ecosystem models that lack spatial and temporal resolution. Specifically, the Corps of Engineers Integrated Compartment Water Quality Model, CE-QUAL-ICM (ICM) is coupled to the Ecopath with Ecosim (EWE) fisheries model. This research examines the feas...

This report describes the formulation of the SEDZLJ sediment transport model, coupling of the model with the ICM eutrophication model, validation of the combined codes on a simplified grid, and application of the combined codes to a prototype system. The code validation tests indicate the codes are correctly coupled. The combined codes meet specified performance criteria including: 1. Mass cons...
متن کاملArtificial Neural Network Approaches to the Prediction of Eutrophication and Algal Blooms in Aras Dam, Iran
Abstract Background and purpose: Eutrophication is one of the major environmental problems in waterways causing substantial adverse impact on domestic, livestock and recreational use of water resources. Aras Dam, Iran which provides Arasful city with drinking water, has chronic algal blooms since 1990. Levels of up to 900,000 cells/mL of toxic cyanobacteria (mainly Anabaena and Microcystis) hav...
متن کاملEutrophication and trophic status using different indices: A study in the Iranian coastal waters of the Caspian Sea
The aim of this study is to assess the eutrophication and trophic status based on different indices and also reference threshold values in the Iranian coastal waters of the southern Caspian Sea (ICWSCS). The water samples (three replicates) were collected along four transects (off the coast from Anzali, Tonekabon, Nowshahr and Amirabad) between spring 2013 and winter 2014. The results show mark...
