Measurement-based quantum foundations

چکیده
I show that quantum theory is the only probabilistic framework that permits arbitrary processes to be emulated by sequences of local measurements. This supports the view that, contrary to conventional wisdom, measurement should not be regarded as a complex phenomenon in need of a dynamical explanation but rather as a primitive – and perhaps the only primitive – operation of the theory. ∗email: [email protected]

Quantum set theory extending standard probabilistic interpretation of quantum theory
The notion of equality between two observables will play many important roles in foundations of quantum theory. However, the standard probabilistic interpretation based on the conventional Born formula does not give the probability of equality relation for a pair of arbitrary observables, since the Born formula gives the probability distribution only for a commuting family of observables. In th...
متن کاملQuantum Information in a Distributed Apparatus
We investigate the information provided about a specified distributed apparatus of n units in the measurement of a quantum state. It is shown that, in contrast to such measurement of a classical state, which is bounded by log(n + 1) bits, the information in a quantum measurement is bounded by 3.7 × n 1 2 bits. This means that the use of quantum apparatus offers an exponential advantage over cla...
متن کاملDecoherence and the foundations of quantum mechanics
This is an introduction to decoherence with an emphasis on the foundational and conceptual aspects of the theory. It explores the extent to which decoherence suggests a solution to the measurement problem, and evaluates the role of decoherence in several different interpretations of quantum mechanics. [This paper is essentially a short version of: M. Schlosshauer, “Decoherence, the measurement ...
متن کاملMeasuring processes and the Heisenberg picture
In this paper, we attempt to establish quantum measurement theory in the Heisenberg picture. First, we review foundations of quantum measurement theory, that is usually based on the Schrödinger picture. The concept of instrument is introduced there. Next, we define the concept of system of measurement correlations and that of measuring process. The former is the exact counterpart of instrument ...
متن کاملProtective Measurement: A Paradigm Shift in Understanding Quantum Mechanics
This article introduces the method of protective measurement and discusses its deep implications for the foundations of quantum mechanics. It is argued that protective measurement implies that the wave function of a quantum system is a representation of the physical state of the system, and a further analysis of the mass and charge distribution of the system, which is measurable by protective m...
