چکیده

Both an external nasal strip device (FLAIR) and furosemide significantly attenuated pulmonary hemorrhage in Thoroughbred horses following a 2-minute bout of high-speed treadmill exercise. Given the purported ergogenic effects of furosemide and the general concerns associated with drug use in racehorses, the external nasal strip is a viable alternative for the attenuation of exerciseinduced pulmonary hemorrhage. Nasal strips do not affect pulmonary gas exchange, anaerobic metabolism, or EIPH in exercising Thoroughbreds.

The present study was carried out to examine whether nasal strip application would improve the exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia and hypercapnia, diminish anaerobic metabolism, and modify the incidence of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) in horses. Two sets of experiments, control and nasal strip experiments, were carried out on seven healthy, sound, exercise-trained Thoroughbred ...

Efficacy of nasal strip and furosemide in mitigating EIPH in Thoroughbred horses.

The purpose of this investigation was to study the effects of an equine nasal strip (NS), furosemide (Fur), and a combination of both (NS + Fur) on exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) at speeds corresponding to near-maximal effort. Five Thoroughbreds (526 +/- 25 kg) were run on a flat treadmill from 7 to 14 m/s in 1 m x s(-1) x min(-)1 increments every 2 wk (treatment order randomized)...

Chapter 2 Altitude affects the prevalence and severity of exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage in South African Thoroughbred racehorses

We sought to determine the prevalence and severity of exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) in South African Thoroughbred racehorses in a racing jurisdiction that did not allow furosemide and nasal dilator strips, racing at different altitudes and to determine the relationship between EIPH and racing performance. The study was an observational cross-sectional study conducted in 1,005 Th...

Review of Alternative Therapies for EIPH

There are effective alternatives to furosemide for the prevention and treatment of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage. They include the nasal strip, concentrated equine serum, and a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Conjugated estrogens and antifibrinolytics may also be effective. Effect of the Sequential Administration of Two Doses of Furosemide on Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension in Thoroughbred Horses

Compared with a single 250-mg dose of furosemide given intravenously 4 h prior to exercise, the administration of two sequential intravenous doses of furosemide (4 and 2 h prior to exercise) does not cause further attenuation of exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension in Thoroughbred horses exercising at their maximal heart rate. Therefore, the sequential administration of two doses o...
