Speedup of NULL convention digital circuits using NULL cycle reduction
نویسنده
چکیده
A NULL Cycle Reduction (NCR) technique is developed to increase the throughput of NULL Convention Logic systems, by reducing the time required to flush complete DATA wavefronts, commonly referred to as the NULL cycle. The NCR technique exploits parallelism by partitioning input wavefronts, such that one circuit processes a DATA wavefront, while its duplicate processes a NULL wavefront. A NCR architecture is developed for both dual-rail and quad-rail circuits, using either full-word or bit-wise completion. To illustrate the technique, NCR is applied to case studies of a dual-rail nonpipelined 4-bit · 4-bit unsigned multiplier using full-word completion, a quad-rail non-pipelined 4-bit · 4-bit unsigned multiplier using full-word completion, and a dual-rail optimally-pipelined 4-bit · 4-bit unsigned multiplier using bit-wise completion. The application of NCR yields a speedup of 1.57, 1.55, and 1.34, respectively, over the standalone versions, while maintaining delay-insensitivity. Furthermore, NCR is applied to a single slow stage of two pipelined designs to boost the pipelines’ overall throughput by 20% and 26%, respectively. 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Reducing Energy Usage of NULL Convention Logic Circuits using NULL Cycle Reduction Combined with Supply Voltage Scaling
The NULL Cycle Reduction (NCR) technique can be used to improve the performance of a NULL Convention Logic (NCL) circuit at the expense of power and area. However, by decreasing the supply voltage, the power of the NCR circuit can be reduced. Since NCR has increased performance, it should be possible to reduce supply voltage to decrease overall power while maintaining the original performance o...

متن کاملDevelopment of a large word-width high-speed asynchronous multiply and accumulate unit
This paper details the design of the fastest known asynchronous Multiply and Accumulate unit (MAC) architecture published to date. The MAC architecture herein is based on the MAC developed in Smith et al. (J. Syst. Archit. 47/12 (2002) 977–998). However, the MAC developed in Smith et al. (2002) contains conditional rounding, scaling, and saturation (CRSS) logic, not present in other comparable ...
متن کاملGate and Throughput Optimizations for Null Convention Self-timed Digital Circuits
NULL Convention Logic (NCL) provides an asynchronous design methodology employing dual-rail signals, quad-rail signals, or other Mutually Exclusive Assertion Groups (MEAGs) to incorporate data and control information into one mixed path. In NCL, the control is inherently present with each datum, so there is no need for worsecase delay analysis and control path delay matching. This dissertation ...
متن کاملSpeedup of Self-Timed Digital Systems Using Early Completion
An Early Completion technique is developed to significantly increase the throughput of NULL Convention self-timed digital systems without impacting latency or compromising their self-timed nature. Early Completion performs the completion detection for registration stagei at the input of the register, instead of at the output of the register, as in standard NULL Convention Logic. This method req...
