A brief overview of the signal-to-noise ratio in MR imaging; including the sources of signal and noise and their respective parameters for optimization. In particular, the balanced SSFP sequence is presented as an example of a special type of gradient-echo (GE) sequence where the dephasing due to readout gradient is exactly zero. Thus b-SSFP yields a very high SNR, in some applications, by continuously acquiring 50% of the available spin polarization M0 [1]
