چکیده

Determining the optimal build directions is one of the most critical factors in RP processes because it affects on the build time, support structure, surface quality as well as the cost. The previous methods could handle simple parts or limited objective functions. Moreover the methods with multiple objective functions, had abstracted them into a single fitness function in which the characteristics of individual objectives could not be reflected properly. In the present work a new algorithm is presented to determine the optimal build-up directions of the part in Stereolithography systems. The algorithm can help RP users select among the optimal build-up directions. The optimization is done using Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA). The method proposed here handles build time, support volume and surface finish as objective functions individually. At each GA step, the surface finish is achieved applying adaptive layer thickness method and optimization algorithm finds the optimal build directions with minimum build time and volume support. The algorithm is developed by MATLAB. To evaluate the algorithm, several sample parts are checked. Key-Words: StereolithographyOptimal Build DirectionMulti Objective Optimization Genetic Algorithm

Converting a CAD model into a manufacturing model for the components made of a multiphase perfect material

To manufacture the component made of a multiphase perfect material (including homogeneous and multi heterogeneous materials), it CAD model should be processed and converted into layered manufacturing model for further transformation of numerical control (NC) coding. This paper develops its detailed approaches and corresponding software. The process planning is made first and includes: (1) deter...

Approximating contact-area of supports in layered manufacturing

This paper considers the problem of approximating the contact-area for non-convex prototypes built via Layered Manufacturing. Specifically, the paper proposes a set of heuristics for choosing candidate build directions along with a criterion to test the quality of each heuristic. The paper also presents efficient algorithms that compute approximately the amount of contact-area for a given build...

Multi-Direction Layered Deposition – An Overview of Process Planning Methodologies

Layered Manufacturing (LM) techniques build a part by adding thin layers of material. In many LM processes overhangs require the deposition of sacrificial supports resulting in an increase in the build time, wastage of material and costly post-processing. This has led to the development of LM systems which can deposit material along multiple directions and eliminate the need for supports. We su...

Protecting critical facets in layered manufacturing: implementation and experimental results

In layered manufacturing (LM), a three-dimensional polyhedral object is built by slicing its (virtual) CAD model, and manufacturing the slices successively. During this process, support structures are used to prop up overhangs. An important process-planning step in LM is choosing a suitable build direction, as it affects, among other things, the location of support structures on the part, which...
