The Role of Sensory Cues and Feeding Context in the Mediation of Pine-Needle Oil's Repellency in Prairie Voles

چکیده
Pine-needle oil inhibits feeding in vertebrate species through sensory cues. Prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) significantly decreased their ingestion of raw apple pieces when pineneedle oil (10% vol/vol) was applied as a repellent coating. During single-choice tests, voles selected similar amounts of sunflower seeds from pine-needle oil-scented jars and vegetable oiltreated jars. However, when jars containing both stimuli were presented simultaneously, voles retrieved significantly more food from the vegetable oil-treated jars than the pine-needle oil-treated jars. Neonatal administration of capsaicin chronically depletes neurotransmitters in Cand A-a fibers greatly diminishing or abolishing pain transmission in the affected neurons (i.e., trigeminal nerve). Capsaicin-desensitized prairie voles decreased their ingestion of pine-needle oil-treated apples to the same extent as the sham-injected control group of animals, suggesting that pineneedle oil's repellency was not mediated by activation of pain fibers. In settings where alternative foods are available, and where minimal sampling of the product does not represent a hazard, Siberian pine-needle oil may be useful as a rodent repellent.

Lesions of the vomeronasal organ disrupt mating-induced pair bonding in female prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster).
The prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) is a highly social, monogamous species and displays pair bonding that can be assessed by the presence of selective affiliation with the familiar partner versus a conspecific stranger. In female prairie voles, exposure to a male or to male sensory cues is essential for estrus induction, and the subsequent mating facilitates pair bond formation. In the pres...

Recent evidence suggests a role for corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) in the regulation of pair bonding in prairie voles. We have previously shown that monogamous and non-monogamous vole species have dramatically different distributions of CRF receptor type 1 (CRF(1)) and CRF receptor type 2 (CRF(2)) in the brain and that CRF(1) and CRF(2) receptor densities in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) a...

Background and Objective: Anopheles maculipennis is one of the most important species of mosquito that can cause serious public health problems worldwide and applying insecticides and synthetic repellents are the current methods used for its control. The continuous application of these chemicals increases the probability of resistance, reduces insecticide efficiency and causes environmental pro...
متن کاملPatterns of brain vasopressin receptor distribution associated with social organization in microtine rodents.
Central vasopressin pathways have been implicated in the mediation of paternal behavior, selective aggression, and affiliation in monogamous prairie voles. Here we demonstrate markedly different patterns of brain vasopressin receptor binding in the monogamous prairie vole and the congeneric nonmonogamous (promiscuous) montane vole. Vasopressin binding was assessed with both 3H-vasopressin and 1...
متن کاملThe hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis of prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster): evidence for target tissue glucocorticoid resistance.
Basal plasma corticosterone levels in prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) are extremely high, in the absence of any apparent negative consequences of glucocorticoid excess. We tested the hypothesis that prairie voles are a novel rodent model of target tissue resistance to glucocorticoids. Prairie voles had a significantly higher adrenal-to-body weight ratio, 5- to 10-fold greater basal plasma ...
