Evolution of Close Binaries: Formation and Merger of Neutron Star Binaries
نویسندگان
چکیده
We discuss the formation and evolution of binaries which contain neutron stars or black holes. It is shown that in a stellar system which for 10 yr had star formation rate similar to the current one in the Galactic disc, the rate of neutron star mergers is ∼ 2 × 10 yr, consistent with the observational estimates. The rate of black hole and neutron star mergers is by an order of magnitude lower. The pairs of black holes form but do not merge because heavy mass loss by their progenitors efficiently moves the binary components apart.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملMerger Sites of Double Neutron Stars and Their Host Galaxies
Using the StarTrack population synthesis code we analyze the formation channels possibly available to double neutron star binaries and find that they can be richer than previously thought. We identify a group of short lived, tight binaries, which do not live long enough to escape their host galaxies, despite their large center-of-mass velocities. We present our most recent results on all possib...
متن کاملOn the Rarity of Double Black Hole Binaries: Consequences for Gravitational-wave Detection
Double black hole binaries are among the most important sources of gravitational radiation for groundbased detectors such as LIGO or VIRGO. Even if formed with lower efficiency than double neutron star binaries, they could dominate the predicted detection rates, since black holes are more massive than neutron stars and therefore could be detected at greater distances. Here we discuss an evoluti...
متن کاملThe Redshift Distribution of Short Γ-ray Bursts from Dynamically Formed Neutron Star Binaries
Short-hard γ-ray bursts (SHBs) may arise from gravitational wave (GW) driven mergers of double neutron star (DNS) systems. DNSs may be "primordial" or can form dynamically by binary exchange interactions in globular clusters during core-collapse. For primordial binaries, the time delay between formation and merger is expected to be short, τ ∼ 0.1 Gyr, implying that the redshift distribution of ...
متن کاملFormation and evolution of binary neutron stars
The formation and evolution of binaries which contain two neutron stars or a neutron star with a black hole companion are discussed in detail. The evolution of the distributions in orbital period and eccentricity for neutron star binaries are studied as a function of time. In the model which fits the observations of highmass binary pulsars best the deposition of orbital energy into common envel...
