The extended CO J = 1 – 0 emission in NGC 253
نویسنده
چکیده
The distribution of 12CO(1–0) has been mapped over the spiral galaxy NGC 253 using the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST). Emission was found to extend 22.4 arcmin along themajor axis and to be concentrated towards the nucleus with an LSR systemic velocity of 235 km s−1. The CO intensity and velocity distribution suggests three subsystems: a dense, highly-rotating nuclear cloud, a disk (with a line of nodes at a position angle of 63◦) extending 150 arcsec each side of the nucleus containing a bar or spiral arms that are located at an azimuth of 21◦, and an outer disk with a position angle of 52◦. The total gas mass derived for the full extent is 2.4 × 109 M , about 2% of the calculated dynamic mass of 10.5× 1010 M .

We report on mid-infrared (MIR) continuum and line emission mapping of the nucleus of NGC 253. The data, with a resolution of 1.4, reveal a double-peaked arc-like [NeII] emission region. Comparison with published data shows that the [NeII] arc is centered on the nucleus of the galaxy. The brightest [NeII] source coincides with the infrared continuum peak. The interpretation of these results is ...

Recently, the CANGAROO-II telescope detected diffuse TeV gamma-ray emission from a nearby edge-on starburst galaxy, NGC 253. The emission mechanism is discussed in this report. We review the emissions of radio-to-TeV gamma-rays from NGC 253, and present a model of the non-thermal emissions due to synchrotron radiations and inverse Compton scatterings. A halo model successfully explains the mult...
متن کاملVLA H 53 α and H 92 α line observations of the central region of NGC 253
We present new Very Large Array (VLA) observations toward NGC 253 of the recombination line H53α (43 GHz) at an angular resolution of 1. 5 × 1. 0. The free-free emission at 43 GHz is estimated to be ∼ 100 mJy, implying a star formation rate of ∼ 1.3 M⊙ yr −1 in the nuclear region of this starburst galaxy. A reanalysis is made for previously reported H92α observations carried out with angular re...
متن کاملDiffuse Thermal Emission from Very Hot Gas in Star- Burst Galaxies: Spatial Results
New BeppoSAX observations of the nearby prototypical starburst galaxies NGC 253 and M82 are presented. A companion paper (Cappi et al. 1998) shows that the hard (2-10 keV) spectrum of both galaxies, extracted from the source central regions, is best described by a thermal emission model with kT ∼ 6–9 keV and abundances ∼ 0.1–0.3 solar. The spatial analysis yields clear evidence that this emissi...

We report the results of a deep spatial, spectral, and timing analysis of ROSAT HRI and PSPC observations of the edge-on starburst galaxy NGC 253. In this first paper, point-like X-ray sources detected within the galaxy and in the field are discussed. The sources are characterized by their X-ray properties (including comparisons with results from the Einstein and ASCA satellites), by correlatio...
