چکیده

The successful encapsulation of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells would assist applications in tissue engineering. In this paper, we have developed a method to produce chitosan-alginate microfibers within a microfluidic chip. Also, by suspending cells in the mixing solution, we fabricated HepG2 cell-laden fibers. The encapsulated HepG2 cells in the chitosan–alginate fibers were more viable than cells encapsulated in pure alginate fibers, suggesting that chitosan provides a better environment for HepG2 cells than alginate. The proposed technique provided an uniform distribution of cells within the fibers, which has been a critical yet previously unmet requirement for tissue engineering.

Controllable generation and encapsulation of alginate fibers using droplet-based microfluidics.

Herein we demonstrate the segmentation of alginate solution streams to generate alginate fibers of precisely controllable lengths between 200 and 1000 μm. Moreover, we demonstrate the subsequent encapsulation of the formed fibers within pL-volume microdroplets, produced within the same microfluidic device, in a direct manner. Finally, we show immediate and complete on-chip gelation of alginate ...

Generation of alginate microfibers with a roller-assisted microfluidic system.

This work describes a convenient microfluidic strategy with a simple and minimal-requirement design for the generation of uniformly-sized alginate gel fibers with diameters one order of magnitude smaller than those formed in conventional methods. Different from common microfluidic methods, our system contains a single microchannel through which alginate solutions are transported and squeezed in...

Continuous Jetting of Alginate Microfiber in Atmosphere Based on a Microfluidic Chip

We present a method based on a microfluidic chip that produces continuous jetting of alginate microfiber in the atmosphere to facilitate its collection and assembly. Through the analysis of the factors influencing the microfiber jetting, the principle and some microfluidic chip design criteria are discussed. A special nozzle is designed near the chip outlet, and deionized water is introduced in...

Novel PDMS cylindrical channels that generate coaxial flow, and application to fabrication of microfibers and particles.

In this paper, we introduce a novel cylindrical channel that generates coaxial flow without using glass microcapillary or complicated silicon processing, and we demonstrate the fabrication of microparticles and microfibers using this channel. The simple fabrication process for cylindrical channels employs the deflection of free-standing thin PDMS membranes. Using this channel, alginate micropar...
