The Fallacies of "ratio-dependent" Predation1
نویسنده
چکیده
It has recently been claimed that the functional response of predators depends on the numbers of prey and predators only via their ratio. Contrary to this claim, I argue that such "ratio-dependent" functional responses are very unlikely to occur on theoretical grounds and have not been shown empirically. Previous justifications for ratio-dependent functional responses ignore the role of these responses in determining prey population dynamics. Patterns in the abundances of trophic levels and experimental results that have been cited as support for "ratio-dependent" predation are consistent with numerous other explanations. These other explanations do not suffer from the pathological behaviors and lack of a plausible mechanism that afflict ratio-dependent models. Furthermore, ratiodependent functional responses, because of their lack of a mechanistic basis, do not provide a good basis for developing more detailed models. Nor can the use of ratio-dependent models be justified as a limiting case of more general predator-dependent models.

The Relationship between Iranian EFL Learners’ Linguistic and Logical Intelligences and the Frequency of Fallacies and Evidence in their Argumentative Writing: A Gender-based Study
The learners’ ability to write a well-organized argumentative essay has gained prominence within the last decades. The multiple intelligences play a significant role in enhancing the precision of both language and thought during the writing process. The current study aimed at investigating the possible relationship between linguistic and logical intelligences and the frequency of informal falla...
متن کاملThe rationality of informal argumentation: a Bayesian approach to reasoning fallacies.
Classical informal reasoning "fallacies," for example, begging the question or arguing from ignorance, while ubiquitous in everyday argumentation, have been subject to little systematic investigation in cognitive psychology. In this article it is argued that these "fallacies" provide a rich taxonomy of argument forms that can be differentially strong, dependent on their content. A Bayesian theo...
متن کاملDiscretization of a fractional order ratio-dependent functional response predator-prey model, bifurcation and chaos
This paper deals with a ratio-dependent functional response predator-prey model with a fractional order derivative. The ratio-dependent models are very interesting, since they expose neither the paradox of enrichment nor the biological control paradox. We study the local stability of equilibria of the original system and its discretized counterpart. We show that the discretized system, which is...
متن کاملThreshold harvesting policy and delayed ratio-dependent functional response predator-prey model
This paper deals with a delayed ratio-dependent functional response predator-prey model with a threshold harvesting policy. We study the equilibria of the system before and after the threshold. We show that the threshold harvesting can improve the undesirable behavior such as nonexistence of interior equilibria. The global analysis of the model as well as boundedness and permanence properties a...
متن کاملHearing is Believing: A Perspective-dependent Account of the Fallacies
In an earlier project, I have attempted a description of ‘fallacy’ in terms of a “bad process” between arguer and audience that occurs in the act of arguing. This involves the key feature of exploring fallaciousness from the audience’s perspective, considering ways that prevent the audience from fulfilling its role in argumentation, where it is unable to appropriately supply assumptions require...
