Formation and breakdown of citric acid in Garcinia fruit. (Xanthochymus guttiferae).

چکیده
Two hypotheses have been put forward to explain the large accumulation of organic acids in fruits: (a) organic acids are not formed in the fruit, but are translocated from the leaves to the fruits which would act merely as storage organs (1, 2) ; and (b) the presence of the organic acids in fruits is due to the conversion of carbohydrates to organic acids in the fruit vesicles and not to translocation from leaves (3, 4). Recent studies in this laboratory have shown the presence in the tissues of Citrus acida of the enzyme system concerned with synthesis of citric acid (5) and suggested that organic acids may generally be formed in the fruit itself. To investigate this question further, the levels of several enzymes likely to be involved in the formation and breakdown were studied in the fruit tissues of Garcinia (Xanthochymus guttijerae) at different stages of growth. An attempt was also made to purify three of these enzymes, namely, condensing enzyme, oxaloacetic carboxylase, and citric desmolase. The data on the partial purification of the condensing enzyme have already been reported (6) and those on the purification of the other two enzymes are reported in this paper. The results show that citric acid is formed from carbohydrate in Garcinia fruit tissue and suggest that its initial accumulation and subsequent disappearance are related to the changes in the activity of the condensing enzyme and other enzymes of the citric acid cycle.

Comparative Vegetative Anatomical Study of the Genus Garcinia L. (clusiaceae / Guttiferae) in Sri Lanka
Vegetative anatomical studies of 10 species of Garcinia L., described by earlier workers to be present in Sri Lanka were carried out. A detailed anatomical investigation of lamina, petiole, young stem and wood, was carried out and the results were analyzed by statistical methods. The study agrees with previous workers in that there are 10 Garcinia species in Sri Lanka. Further, it also revealed...

Garcinia xanthochymus has been widely used in traditional Chinese medicine for expelling worms and removing food toxins. Bioassay-guided fractionation of an EtOAc-soluble extract of G. xanthochymus stem bark led to the isolation of six new xanthones. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, especially 2D-NMR techniques. Free-radical-scavenging activities of the isolated compou...

The in vitro antitumour-promoting, cytotoxic, and antioxidant activities of two ester derivatives of garcinia acid, that is, 2-(butoxycarbonylmethyl)-3-butoxycarbonyl-2-hydroxy-3-propanolide (1) and 1',1''-dibutyl methyl hydroxycitrate (2), that had been previously isolated from the fruits of Garcinia atroviridis Griff. ex T. Anders (Guttiferae), were examined. Based on the inhibition of Epstei...
متن کاملImproved liquid chromatographic method for determination of organic acids in leaves, pulp, fruits, and rinds of Garcinia.
An improved liquid chromatographic (LC) method was developed for determination of organic acids in leaves, pulp, fruits, and rinds of Garcinia. At present, the commonly used LC method for analysis of organic acids in Garcinia extracts uses direct application of the extracts on the column. This practice gradually reduces efficiency of the column and shortens its life. In the improved method, the...

The present study was carried out to investigate laboratory germination responses of six collections of Garcinia kola seeds to six different hormonal pre-germination treatments. This consisted of soaking seeds for three days in cool distilled water (control), in cool distilled water supplemented with 10 M of either naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), benzylamin...
