Reactive Transport Modeling of Amd Release and Attenuation at the Fault Lake Tailings Area, Falconbridge, Ontario

چکیده
Numerical simulations of the Fault Lake Tailings were conducted to assess the long-term impact of AMD-generation on downgradient receptors. The effects of impoundment geometry, contrasting permeability, water content, and mineralogy of tailings and native sediments were considered. Simulation results suggest that over a time period of 1,000 years only the top three meters of tailings become oxidized and that AMD is preferentially released at the periphery of the impoundment. Although the permeability of the tailings is lower than that of the aquifer and groundwater flow is deflected around the deep saturated tailings mass, AMD is not inhibited from percolating into the aquifer, because the bulk of the tailings are located within the vadose zone. The carbonate content of the underlying material likely provides sufficient buffering capacity to attenuate most metals and neutralize pH over the long-term. Additional

Public transport risk assessment through fault tree analysis
This study focused on the public transport risk assessment in District one of Tehran through Fault Tree Analysis involving the three criteria of human, vehicle and road in Haddon matrix. In fact, it examined the factors contributing to the occurrence of road accidents at several urban black spots within District 1. Relying on road safety checklists and survey of experts, this study made an ef...
متن کاملEffect of operating parameters on desulphurization of mine tailings by froth flotation.
A site-specific study is carried out to assess the suitability of froth flotation for desulphurization of reactive mine tailings at the Musselwhite Mine, Northern Ontario, Canada, to prevent acid mine drainage (AMD). The results from pilot scale flotation tests on an Outokumpu flotation unit are presented, which confirm that froth flotation is effective to reduce sulphide contents of tailings. ...
متن کاملRisk assessment of industrial hydrocarbon release and transport in the vadose zone as it travels to groundwater table: A case study
In this paper, a modeling tool for risk assessment analysis of the movement of hydrocarbon contaminants in the vadose zone and mass flux of contamination release into the groundwater table was developed. Also, advection-diffusion-reaction equations in combination with a three-phase equilibrium state between trapped air, soil humidity, and solid particles of unsaturated soil matrix were numerica...
متن کاملDevelopment of a regional attenuation relationship for Alborz, Iran
New attenuation relationships for rock and soil in Alborz, have been developed in this study. When the quantity of usable ground-motion data is inadequate in the magnitude and distance ranges, development of an empirical prediction equation is deficient. Due to lack of data, the two well-known simulation techniques, point source and finite-fault models have been used to generate more than ten t...
متن کاملRare earth and trace element signatures for assessing an impact of rock mining and processing on the environment: Wiśniówka case study, south-central Poland
A detailed hydrogeochemical study was performed in the Wiśniówka mining area (south-central Poland). This covered three acid pit bodies, historic tailings acid ponds, acid pools, and additionally two neighboring rivers. All these acid mine drainage (AMD) waters are characterized by the pH in the range of 1.7 (pools) to 3.5 (tailings ponds). The most interesting is the Podwiśniówka acid pit lake...
