Evidence for the occurrence of rumination-like behaviour, or merycism, in the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus, Goldfuss)

چکیده
This paper provides the ®rst account of merycism in koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), and in doing so, potentially sheds new light on the occurrence and signi®cance of this behaviour in other herbivorous marsupials. Koalas ®tted with acoustically sensitive transmitters, to monitor mastication and ingestive behaviour, were also found to make bouts of rhythmic `mastication-like' noises that were not associated with ingestive feeding events. On average, these bouts consisted of 9.16 `mastications', at an average rate of 1.21 `mastications' per second, and occurred 53.3 times throughout a 24-h period. Furthermore, bouts were usually preceded by, and always followed by, a series of `creaky', guttural noises that were interpreted as regurgitation and re-swallowing, respectively. Merycism may allow koalas to periodically re-masticate gastric digesta, while in a resting position, and thus potentially save energy and increase the extent of food preparation. Consequently, merycism may contribute to the koala's ability to consume a high ®bre, poor

متن کاملThe first case of onychomycosis in a koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) due to atypical isolates of Microsporum gypseum, a diagnostic challenge
Background and Purpose: Superficial mycotic infections have been only poorly described in koalas and there are no reliable mycologically confirmed data regarding clinical isolation of dermatophytes in this animal. We report an 11-yearold female koala, kept in a zoo in Tokyo, Japan, and presenting with hyperkeratotic lesions and scaly plaques on forepaw claws and pads reminis...
متن کاملAccuracy and efficiency of detection dogs: a powerful new tool for koala conservation and management
Accurate data on presence/absence and spatial distribution for fauna species is key to their conservation. Collecting such data, however, can be time consuming, laborious and costly, in particular for fauna species characterised by low densities, large home ranges, cryptic or elusive behaviour. For such species, including koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), indicators of species presence can be a ...

The primary aim of the National Koala Conservation and Management Strategy 2009 – 2014 (NKCMS) is to conserve the Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) by retaining viable populations in the wild throughout the species’ natural range (Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council (NRMMC) 2009). In order to assist this aim, Action 1.06 of the NKCMS promotes the need for development of standard monito...
متن کاملMultifarious activities of cellulose degrading bacteria from Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) faeces
Cellulose degrading bacteria from koala faeces were isolated using caboxymethylcellulose-Congo red agar, screened in vitro for different hydrolytic enzyme activities and phylogenetically characterized using molecular tools. Bacillus sp. and Pseudomonas sp. were the most prominent bacteria from koala faeces. The isolates demonstrated good xylanase, amylase, lipase, protease, tannase and lignin p...
