A Differentiated Service Model for Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) of IEEE 802.11e WLANs

چکیده
In this paper, we propose a new differentiated service model, referred to as Differentiated Service-EDCA (DS-EDCA), for the Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) of IEEE 802.11e wireless local area networks (WLANs). With DS-EDCA, both strict priority and weighted fair service can be provided. The strict priority service is provided for high priority traffic through carefully setting the EDCA parameter sets of lower priority traffic; the proportional fairness service is enabled by determining the backoff intervals according to the distributed scheduling discipline (DFS). We also propose a hierarchical link sharing model for IEEE 802.11e WLANs, in which AP and mobile stations are allocated different amounts of link resource. The performance of DS-EDCA and EDCA is compared via ns-2 simulations. The results show that DSEDCA outperforms the original EDCA in terms of its support for both strict priority and weighted fair service. More importantly, DS-EDCA can be easily implemented, and is compatible to the IEEE 802.11 Standard.

Throughput Analysis Model for IEEE 802.11e EDCA with Multiple Access Categories
IEEE 802.11e standard has been specified to support differentiated quality of service (QoS), one of the critical issues on the conventional IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs). Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) is the fundamental and mandatory contention-based channel access method of IEEE 802.11e, and delivers traffic based on differentiated Access Categories (ACs). A gen...

First Person Shooter (FPS) games are a popular online gaming genre played predominately over wired networks. FPS games are highly interactive and have stringent delay requirements. However, the explosive growth in wireless LAN (WLAN) deployment has seen an increase in the use of such networks for gaming purposes. The varied performance of the IEEE 802.11 MAC Distributed Coordination Function (D...

The IEEE 802.11e standard was introduced to overcome the lack of QoS support for the legacy IEEE 802.11 WLANs. It enhances the Media Access Control (MAC) layer operations to incorporate service differentiation. However, there is a need to prevent overloading of wireless channels since the QoS experienced by traffic flows is degraded with heavily loaded channels. An admission control scheme for ...

The IEEE 802.11e standard revises the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer of the former IEEE 802.11 standard for Quality-of-Service (QoS) provision in the Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). The Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) function of 802.11e defines multiple Access Categories (AC) with AC-specific Contention Window (CW) sizes, Arbitration Interframe Space (AIFS) values, and Tran...
