Linked Ego Networks: Improving estimate reliability and validity with respondent-driven sampling

چکیده
Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) is currently widely used for the study of HIV/AIDS-related high risk populations. However, recent studies have shown that traditional RDS methods are likely to generate large variances and may be severely biased since the assumptions behind RDS are seldom fully met in real life. To improve estimation in RDS studies, we propose a new method to generate estimates with ego network data, which is collected by asking RDS respondents about the composition of their personal networks, such as “what proportion of your friends are married?”. By simulations on an extracted real-world social network of gay men as well as on artificial networks with varying structural properties, we show that the new estimator, RDS Iego shows superior performance over traditional RDS estimators. Importantly, RDS Iego exhibits strong robustness to the preference of peer recruitment and variations in network structural properties, such as homophily, activity ratio, and community structure. While the biases of traditional RDS estimators can sometimes be as large as 10% ∼ 20%, biases of all RDS Iego estimates are well restrained to be less than 2%. The positive results henceforth encourage researchers to collect ego network data for variables of interests by RDS, for both hard-to-access populations and general populations when random sampling is not applicable. The limitation of RDS Iego is evaluated by simulating RDS assuming different level of reporting error.

Estimating the reliability and validity of personal support measures: full information ML estimation with planned incomplete data
Egocentered networks are common in social science research. Here, the unit of analysis is a respondent (ego) together with his/her personal network (alters). Usually, several variables are used to describe the relationship between egos and alters. In this paper, the aim is to estimate the reliability and validity of the averages of these measures by the multitrait–multimethod (MTMM) approach. T...

Short Abstract: We explore the network coverage of a Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS) sample of female sex workers (FSW) in China as part of an effort to evaluate RDS' claim of population representation with empirical data. We take advantage of unique information on the social networks of FSW obtained from two overlapping studies of FSWs --RDS and a venuebased sampling approach (PLACE) -and use...

Sampling hidden populations is challenging due to the lack of convenience statistical frames. Since most populations exposed to special diseases are hidden and hard to reach, sampling methods that produce representative and efficient samples from the populations have become a study subject for researches all over the world. Because of the unknown probability of selecting samples in conventional...
