Testing for non-Gaussianity of the cosmic microwave background in harmonic space: an empirical process approach

چکیده
Abstract We present a new, model-independent approach for measuring non-Gaussianity of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy pattern. Our approach is based on the empirical distribution function of the normalized spherical harmonic expansion coefficients alm of a nearly full-sky CMB map, like the ones expected from forthcoming satellite experiments. Using a set of Kolmogorov-Smirnov type tests, we check for Gaussianity and independency of the alm. We test the method on two non-Gaussian toy-models of the CMB, one generated in spherical harmonic space and one in pixel (real) space. We also provide some rigorous results, possibly of independent interest, on the exact distribution of the spherical harmonic coefficients normalized by an estimated angular power spectrum.

The Trispectrum of the 4 Year Cobe Dmr Data
We propose an estimator for the trispectrum of a scalar random field on a sphere, discuss its geometrical and statistical properties, and outline its implementation. By estimating the trispectrum of the 4 yr COBE Differential Microwave Radiometer experiment data (in HEALPix pixelization), we find new evidence of a non-Gaussian signal associated with a known systematic effect. We find that by re...
متن کاملTHE EMPIRICAL PROCESS ON GAUSSIAN SPHERICAL HARMONICS By Domenico Marinucci 1 and Mauro Piccioni
We establish weak convergence of the empirical process on the spherical harmonics of a Gaussian random field in the presence of an unknown angular power spectrum. This result suggests various Gaus-sianity tests with an asymptotic justification. The issue of testing for Gaussianity on isotropic spherical random fields has recently received strong empirical attention in the cosmological literatur...
متن کاملNew approaches to probing Minkowski functionals
We generalize the concept of the ordinary skew-spectrum to probe the effect of non-Gaussianity on the morphology of cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps in several domains: in real space (where they are commonly known as cumulant-correlators), and in harmonic and needlet bases. The essential aim is to retain more information than normally contained in these statistics, in order to assist in d...
متن کاملA new approach to probing primordial non-Gaussianity
We address the dual challenge of estimating deviations from Gaussianity arising in models of the early Universe, whilst retaining information necessary to assess whether a detection of nonGaussianity is primordial. We do this by constructing a new statistic, the bispectrum-related power spectrum, which is constructed from a map of the cosmic microwave background. The estimator is optimized for ...
متن کاملPrimordial Magnetic Field and Non-gaussianity of the 1-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (wmap) Data
Alfven turbulence caused by statistically isotropic and homogeneous primordial magnetic field induces correlations in the cosmic microwave background anisotropies. The correlations are specifically between spherical harmonic modes al−1,m and al+1,m. In this paper we approach this issue from phase analysis of the CMBmaps derived from the WMAP data sets. Using circular statistics and return phase...
