Porcupine Damage and Repellent Research in the Interior Pacific Northwest
نویسندگان
چکیده
Porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) rely on trees and shrubs for winter food and can cause serious, localized damage to conifers. Twenty-two percent of ponderosa trees (Pinus ponderosa) examined in southeastern Washington were damaged by porcupines. Most damage involved complete girdling of the midto upper boles of the larger trees (12 to 30 cm dbh) in the stand. Preliminary repellent trials with captive porcupines suggested that several materials might reduce tree damage, especially predator-associated odors. Field trials are needed to assess efficacy and duration of protection under ambient winter conditions.

RECENT APPROACHES TO CONTROLLING MOUNTAIN BEAVERS (Aplodontia rufa) IN PACIFIC NORTHWEST FORESTS
Biologists of the Denver Wildlife Research Center are currently investigating ways of managing mountain beaver (Aplodontia rufa) populations and are developing methods for alleviating mountain beaver damage to conifer trees being grown for timber in the Pacific Northwest. Studies initiated in 1986 indicated that aversive conditioning with Big Game Repellent Powder (BGR-P) dusted on cull Douglas...

متن کاملPost-Fire Erosional Processes in the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain Regions
The objective of this paper is to provide a general overview of the influence of wildland fires on the erosional processes common to the forested landscapes of the western United States. Wildfire can accelerate erosion rates because vegetation is an important factor controlling erosion. There can be great local and regional differences, however, in the relative importance of different erosional...
متن کاملClimatic Regionalization and the Spatio-Temporal Occurrence of ExtremeSingle-Year Drought Events (1500–1998) in the Interior PacificNorthwest, USA
Tree-ring records from western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis var. occidentalis Hook.) growing throughout the interior Pacific Northwest identify extreme climatic pointer years (CPYs) (i.e., severe single-year droughts) from 1500–1998. Widespread and extreme CPYs were concentrated in the 16th and early part of the 17th centuries and did not occur again until the early 20th century. The 217-yr ...

SCIENCE Geological History In past discussions and speculations concerning the early peopling of the New World, the hypothesized "migration cor-ridor" between the Cordilleran and Lau-rentian ice sheets has figured prominently (1). By contrast with this much-mooted route east of the Rocky Mountains , little consideration has been given to possible routes west of the Rockies. I will examine such ...
