Using Partial-cut Harvesting to Conserve Terrestrial Lichens in Managed Landscapes

چکیده

he development of terrestrial lichen communities used as forage by woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus) in boreal and subboreal forests is strongly linked to changes in canopy structure and associated changes in canopy microclimate that occur during stand succession. Additionally, substrate type and proximity to propagule sources can have a major inluence on lichen establishment. Increasingly, the development of lichen communities now occurs within managed landscapes where the scale and intensity of disturbance events can be very diferent from those that historically shaped lichen community development. Nonetheless, our knowledge of factors that previously mediated the establishment and development of lichen communities may provide important clues to understanding the success of terrestrial lichens in managed landscapes, and help guide forest managers in designing practices that promote conservation of woodland caribou habitat. Evidence from recent harvesting trials suggests that partial-cut harvesting may be a silvicultural system that can provide forest managers with tools for conserving terrestrial forage lichens in caribou winter range. Best practices and limitations on the use of partial-cut harvesting techniques to conserve terrestrial lichen communities are reviewed, including a consideration of secondary impacts on caribou from factors such as the construction of forestry access roads and disposal of logging debris and slash. 1 Ecosystem Science and Management Program, University of Northern British Columbia, Prince George, British Columbia, V2N 4Z9, Canada. Bryophytes, Lichens and Dead Wood in Young Managed Boreal Forests

Rudolphi, J. 2007. Bryophytes, lichens and dead wood in young managed boreal forests. Doctor’s dissertation. ISSN 1652-6880, ISBN 978-91-576-7387-9 The decrease in old-growth forests threatens the diversity of a range of organisms. Only a small portion of the forested area in Sweden is formally protected and the majority of unprotected forests are young (<70 years). The objective of this thesis...

Transient trade-off between climate benefit and biodiversity loss of harvesting stumps for bioenergy

To replace fossil fuel and thereby mitigate climate change, harvesting of wood such as stumps for bioenergy will likely increase. Coarse deadwood is an important resource for biodiversity and stumps comprise the main part of the coarse deadwood in managed forests. We provide the first integrated analysis of the long-term climate and biodiversity impacts of a whole landscape. We simultaneously p...

Using the focal species approach for conserving biodiversity in landscapes managed for forestry

1. Objectives: To synthesize research that has used a focal species approach to conserve biodiversity in managed landscapes. In particular the objectives were: a) Summarize and evaluate research that has used the focal species approach and construct criteria for using this approach. SFMN research will be highlighted, but a broader synthesis will be undertaken. b) Critique the use of focal or in...

Estimating plant abundance using inflated beta distributions: Applied learnings from a lichen–caribou ecosystem

Quantifying abundance and distribution of plant species can be difficult because data are often inflated with zero values due to rarity or absence from many ecosystems. Terrestrial fruticose lichens (Cladonia and Cetraria spp.) occupy a narrow ecological niche and have been linked to the diets of declining caribou and reindeer populations (Rangifer tarandus) across their global distribution, an...

Allometric Equations of Beech (Fagus orientalis L.) Biomass in Managed and Unmanaged Stands in Safarood's Forest, Mazandaran Province

Biomass measurement is important in terms of ecological and economical evaluation of the structure and conditions of habitat and can provide an estimate for carbon sequestration in different organs of tree. In order to assess the amount of biomass in harvested and unmanaged Beech stands, two compartments (511 and 514) of Safaroodchr('39')s forest  were selected. A plot of 6.25 hectare from e...
