Measuring fiber and its effectiveness in ruminant diets
نویسنده
چکیده
It appears that ruminants such as cattle and sheep evolved as forage consumers. Plant cell walls, which we measure as fiber, cannot be digested by animals, but must be fermented by microorganisms. Fermentative digestion of fiber is slow and incomplete, and ruminants have developed many attributes that result in efficient digestion. They swallow large particles of forage and selectively retain them in the rumen to allow adequate time for fermentation. They regurgitate and rechew the large particles (rumination) to enhance digestion and allow passage through the digestive tract. During chewing, they produce salivary buffers that help maintain the pH in the rumen. Ideally, roughages should be an integral part of the diet of ruminants to take advantage of their unique digestive capability. However, there are nutritional, operational, and economic reasons for limiting the forage or roughage content in some ruminant rations.

Physical Characteristics and Physically Effectiveness of Beet Pulp for Ruminant
Beet pulp as component of cattle feed can be processed in different way. Tis study was performed to characterize the physical properties of so called fine beet pulp (FBP); normal beet pulp (NBP) and pelleted beet pulp (PBP). The following parameters were determined: bulk density, kinetics of hydration, functional specific gravity (FSG), water holding capacity (WHC), soluble dry matter and intri...
متن کاملThe replacement value of corn silage with wild pistachio (Pistacia khinjuk) leaf in the diet of sheep and its effect on digestibility of fiber and protein
The aim of present experiment was to investigate the feeding value of wild pistachio leaf (khinjuk leaf, KL) for Arabi sheep. The digestibility and fermentation of diets containing different amounts of khinjuk (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30%) were measured. Then, the effect of presence of KL in the diet and its tannin content on the digestibility of alfalfa hay (Alfa), wheat straw (WS) and soybea...

The present study was conducted to identify nutritional value of Rumex obtusifolius in three phenological stages (vegetative growth, flowering, and maturity). Samples were randomly taken in pastures of Saravan in Rasht, Iran in 2015. After drying and grinding, the chemical compositions of Crude Protein (CP), Crude Fiber (CF), Ether Extract (EE), Total Ash (ASH), Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), a...
