A Simple, Direct Method to Measure Dissolved Co2 Using Soda Lime
نویسندگان
چکیده
A method for the direct assessment of the dissolved CO2 concentration in supersaturated water is presented that is based on changes to the physical chemistry of soda lime due to uptake of CO2. The approach is an adaptation of a standard method used for the quantifi cation of soil respiration, and was found to agree with pCO2 measurements made using infrared gas analysis. In this method, the soda lime is deployed in a CO2 bucket chamber, and a water sample is allowed to outgas for 48 hours. The initial dissolved CO2 concentration is then determined from changes in the dry mass of soda lime, which is blank-corrected and adjusted based on differences in molecular weights of soda lime before and after the chemical adsorption of CO2. The method is applicable to highly-supersaturated surface water and emergent groundwater.

Measurement of soil CO2 efflux using soda lime absorption: both quantitative and reliable
Measurement of soil CO2 efflux using a non-flow-through steady-state (NFT-SS) chamber with alkali absorption of CO2 by soda lime was tested and compared with a flow-through non-steady-state (FT-NSS) IRGAmethod to assess suitability of using soda lime for field monitoring over large spatial scales and integrated over a day. Potential errors and artifacts associated with the soda lime chamber met...
متن کاملQuantitative Comparison of In Situ Soil CO2 Flux Measurement Methods
Development of reliable regional or global carbon budgets requires accurate measurement of soil CO2 flux. We conducted laboratory and field studies to determine the accuracy and comparability of methods commonly used to measure in situ soil CO2 fluxes. Methods compared included two static techniques, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and soda lime as CO2 traps; a multichamber open dynamic system (OC) wit...
متن کاملThe effect of over- or underfilling the soda lime canister on CO2 absorption in two closed-circuit oxygen rebreathers.
O2 diving incidents investigated by our laboratory were related to improper filling of the soda lime canister in closed-circuit oxygen rebreathers. We studied the effect of overfilling or underfilling the canister on CO2 absorption using a continuous flow of 5% CO2. With a full canister in the Oxyger 57, CO2 began to rise at 130-160 min, reaching 1% at 240 min and 1.5% at 270 min. Similar resul...
متن کاملP 29: Effects of Different Doses of Some GABAergic Agents in Mouse Brain Under Hypoxic State: Possible Role in Neuro-Inflammation
Introduction: Pro-inflammatory chemokines and cytokines such as MCP-1 and IL6 can activate microglial cells that has found in some neuro-inflammatory disorders. Hypoxia activates cerebral endothelial cells to release these pro-inflammatory mediators. We aimed to investigate the anti-hypoxic effects of different doses of some GABAergic agents. Materials and Methods: We randomly divid...
متن کاملApplication of a high-throughput laboratory method to assess litter decomposition rates in multiple-species experiments
Laboratory decomposition experiments measuring the mineralization of C from plant residue are increasingly used to test the effects of different litter sources and soil conditions. To date, the most widely used methods are infra-red gas analysis (IRGA) and gas chromatography, which are time-consuming, and relatively expensive and complex to operate. The aim of this study was to devise a simple ...
