چکیده

Proefschrift voorgelegd tot het behalen van de graad van doctor in de wetenschappen, richting informatica aan de transnationale Universiteit Limburg te verdedigen door Preface First of all, I would like to thank Jan Van den Bussche for his support during the last four years. His never ending enthusiasm and advice made this dissertation possible. His intensive use of red ballpoints, learned me, hopefully, how to write scientific texts. Further, I am grateful to Bart Kuijpers. His geometrical insights were of great help. I am also grateful to Peter Revesz. The Renumbering Algorithm in Chapter 6 is the result of our joint work. I am also grateful to Bart Goethals. Apart from his enjoyable company as office-mate, his programming skills and SUN Ultra 10, made the experiments in Chapter 6 possible. This dissertation further benefitted from pleasant discussions with, among others, Chris Giannella, Stephan Kreutzer and Leonid Libkin. I also would like to thank Masahiro Shiota for bringing Lemma I.1.3 and Lemma I.1.5 in his book [66] to my attention. I thank the members of our research group for creating a stimulating environment. Many thanks to all people who contributed to this dissertation in some way or another. More specifically, my thanks go to the administrative staff, colleagues, family, and friends. Finally, I would like to thank Kristin for her support over the years.

On Topological Elementary Equivalence of Spatial Databases

We consider spatial databases and queries definable using first-order logic and real polynomial inequalities. We are interested in topological queries: queries whose result only depends on the topological aspects of the spatial data. Two spatial databases are called topologically elementary equivalent if they cannot be distinguished by such topological first-order queries. Our contribution is a...

Region-Based Querz Languages for Spatial Databases in the Topological Data Model

We consider spatial databases in the topological data model, i.e., databases that consist of a finite number of labeled regions in the real plane. Such databases partition the plane further into elementary regions. We propose a first-order language, which uses elementary-region variables and label variables, to query spatial databases. All queries expressible in this first-order logic are topol...

Topological Queries in Spatial Databases

We study topological queries over two-dimensional spatial databases. First, we show that the topological properties of semialgebraic spatial regions can be completely specified using a classical finite structure, essentially the embedded planar graph of the region boundaries. This provides an invariant characterizing semi-algebraic regions up to homeomorphism. All topological queries on semialg...

Mining Topological Relationship Patterns from Spatiotemporal Databases

Mining topological relationship patterns involve three aspects. First one is the discovery of geometric relationships like disjoint, cover, intersection and overlap between every pair of spatiotemporal objects. Second one is tracking the change of such relationships with time from spatiotemporal databases. Third one is mining the topological relationship patterns. Spatiotemporal databases deal ...

Topological Relations in Spatial Databases

Various models for the representation of topological relations have been developed. The aim of this chapter is to propose a comprehensive view of state-of-the-art models for topological relations in spatial databases. A prominent role is assumed by the CBM (calculus-based method), which offers a small set of topological relations with high expressiveness and suitability to be embedded as operat...
