Tracking Editing Processes in Volunteered Geographic Information: The Case of OpenStreetMap
نویسندگان
چکیده
With an increasing number of applications building on OpenStreetMap, data quality is becoming a pressing issue. Data provenance gives useful hints that facilitate data quality assessments based on the features’ persistence. However, this requires a detailed analysis of the editing history and the corresponding contributors. In order to make this provenance information explicit, we introduce a provenance vocabulary for OpenStreetMap and show how to annotate OpenStreetMap data using this vocabulary. We specify the different types of patterns that can be found in the provenance of features. This paper therefore lays the foundation for approaches to assess data quality that build solely on the intrinsic information collected in the OpenStreetMap database, using the trustworthiness of features as a proxy function for data quality.

Amateur or Professional: Assessing the Expertise of Major Contributors in OpenStreetMap Based on Contributing Behaviors
Volunteered geographic information (VGI) projects, such as OpenStreetMap (OSM), provide an alternative way to produce geographic data. Research has proven that the resulting data in some areas are of decent quality, which guarantees their usability in various applications. Though these achievements are normally attributed to the huge heterogeneous community mainly consisting of amateurs, it is ...
متن کاملThe Role of Communities in Volunteered Geographic Information projects
As a society we are now more connected than ever before. Citizens interact with each other and form virtual communities based on a common interest or being involved in certain cultural, political, intellectual, or other issues. Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) is generated when citizens annotate content generated by them in social media and on smart devices. OpenStreetMap is a famous ex...
متن کاملA Conceptual Model for Analyzing Contribution Patterns in the Context of VGI
The chapter proposes a conceptual model as foundation for analyzing user contributions in the context of VGI. The conceptual model is based on a set of action and domain concepts, which are combined to a task-model describing typical tasks of volunteered geographic information contribution. As a proof-of-concept, the model is applied to two sample data sets that are extracted from the OpenStree...
متن کاملProvenance and Trust in Volunteered Geographic Information: The Case of OpenStreetMap
We propose to use the trustworthiness of features in OpenStreetMap as a proxy function for data quality, where a feature’s trust value is computed solely from its history. The trustworthiness is based on the different contribution patterns that can be found in a feature’s history, such as rollbacks or deletions. We argue that these patterns influence the trustworthiness of a feature and its con...
متن کاملAnalysis of Interaction and Co-editing Patterns amongst OpenStreetMap Contributors
OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a very well known and popular Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) project on the Internet. In January 2013 OSM gained it’s one millionth registered member. Several studies have shown that only a small percentage of these registered members carry out the large majority of the mapping and map editing work. In this paper we discuss results from a social-network based an...
