Phenological changes within a growth season in two semi-natural pastures in southern Sweden

چکیده
Phenological changes within a growth season were investigated in two grazed, seminatural grasslands in southern Sweden. On four occasions during the growth season, two independent observers recorded plant frequency and percentage cover. The vegetation data sets were analysed with ordination methods. The temporal changes were highly significant, but accounted for only a small part of the total variation in the data. Most species had early maxima, regarding both cover and frequency. There were differences in temporal pattern between the two grasslands. In a xeric area, the vegetation underwent a major change sometime in August, between survey-visit three and four. In a mesic area, the vegetation changed throughout the study period but least so during August. Therefore, phenological changes can be manifested in different ways, even within the same geographic region. Species-wise ordination scores highlighted those species whose records might be most affected by phenological patterns, information which is valuable when evaluating data collected in Scandinavian grasslands.

Questions: We asked several linked questions about phenology and precipitation relationships at local, landscape, and regional spatial scales within individual seasons, between seasons, and between year temporal scales. (1) How do winter and summer phenological patterns vary in response to total seasonal rainfall? (2) How are phenological rates affected by the previous season rainfall? (3) How ...
متن کاملMore Stable Productivity of Semi Natural Grasslands than Sown Pastures in a Seasonally Dry Climate
In the Neotropics the predominant pathway to intensify productivity is generally thought to be to convert grasslands to sown pastures, mostly in monoculture. This article examines how above-ground net primary productivity (ANPP) in semi-natural grasslands and sown pastures in Central America respond to rainfall by: (i) assessing the relationships between ANPP and accumulated rainfall and indice...
متن کاملForage quality of three life forms of rangeland species in semi arid and semi humid regions in different phenological stages
For determination of grazing capacity, information of forage quality is essential which is influenced by various factors. The main objective of this research was investigation on effects of species, phenological stages, and life form on values of forage quality indices of six range species. Species were two grasses (Bromus tomentellus and Dactylis glomerata), two forbs (Ferula ovina and Coronil...
