Massive Stars as Important Contributors to Two Micron Light

چکیده

Near infrared light at 2m is relatively insensitive to the presence of hot young stars and dust in galaxies, and there has been recent interest in using it as a mass tracer in spiral galaxies. I present evidence that young, cool supergiant stars, whose presence is indicated by strong CO absorption in a 2:36m bandpass, dominate the 2m light from active star forming regions in the galaxy NGC 1309. The galaxy's quiescent regions, in contrast, do not show evidence of young supergiants. It follows that the 2m light comes from diierent stellar populations in diierent places, and large changes in the 2m surface brightness need not imply correspondingly large features in the galaxy's mass distribution.

On the destruction of star-forming clouds

Type II supernovae (SNe), probably the most important contributors to stellar feedback in galaxy formation, explode within the very dense star-forming clouds, where the injected energy is most easily radiated away. The efficiency of type II SNe in injecting energy into the interstellar medium (ISM) and in re-heating a fraction of the original star-forming cloud is estimated with the aid of a tw...

The stellar population and the evolutionary state of HII regions and starburst galaxies

RH iis and starbursts are both powered by massive stars. They are the main contributors to the heating of the ISM via radiative and mechanical energy. Techniques to derive the stellar content and the evolutionary state of RH iis and starbursts from their ultraviolet and optical integrated light are reviewed. A prototypical RH ii (NGC 604) and nuclear starburst (NGC 7714) are discussed in more d...

Morphologies of Two Massive Old Galaxies at Z ∼ 2.5

We present the results of NICMOS imaging of two massive galaxies photometrically selected to have old stellar populations at z ∼ 2.5. Both galaxies are dominated by apparent disks of old stars, although one of them also has a small bulge comprising about 1/3 of the light at rest-frame 4800 Å. The presence of massive disks of old stars at high redshift means that at least some massive galaxies i...

Adaptive Optics Photometry and Astrometry of Binary Stars. III. A Faint Companion Search of O-Star Systems

Binary star systems are frequently the only source for the fundamental determination of the most basic property of a star, its mass. The masses of a sample of stars, when determined with sufficient accuracy, serve as crucial tests of our theoretical understanding of stellar formation, structure, and evolution. By combining information from the angular orbit projected on the sky (or from a light...

High-Resolution Spectroscopy of Extremely Metal-Poor Stars in the Least Evolved Galaxies: Ursa Major II and Coma Berenices

We present spectra of six metal-poor stars in two of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way (MW), Ursa Major II, and Coma Berenices obtained with the Keck/High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES). These observations include the first high-resolution spectroscopic observations of extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H] < −3.0) stars not belonging to the MW halo field star population. We ...
