An Interactive phonological Rule Testing System

One of t he many ways t he h i g h s p e e d computer i s u s e f u l t o l i n g u i s t i c r e s e a r c h e r s i s f o r t h e e v a l u a t i o n of g e n e r a t i v e grammars. S e v e r a l p r o ~ s ~ i n g sys t ems f o r t h i s purpose have been d e s c r i b e d i n the l i t e r a t u r e . 1 , 2 , 3 , ~ A t r a n s f o r m a t i o n a l g e n e r a t i v e grammar c o n s i s t s o f a s y n t a c t i c component, a p h o n o l o g i c a l component and a s eman t i c component. Th i s p a p e r i s concerned s o l e l y w i t h t he p h o n o l o g i c a l component. While t h i s component i s a dependent p a r t o f t h e e n t i r e grammar, sys t ems of p h o n o l o g i c a l r u l e s f o r s p e c i f i c l a n guages , i.e, the phonological components of the graEmars of th~se languages, have been separately presented by Chomsk~ and Halle 5, Kuroda , Schaohter and Fromkin 7 and others. The Sound Pattern of English 5 (hereafter, ~PE) includes the 'formalism used for presenting phonological rules and the schemata that represent them, and the interpretation of this formaliam'° (p° 390) This formal description is taken as the basis for the rule structures d/acussed in this paper.
