Pressure-Volume Loops in Clinical Research∗

چکیده

Left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) depends on ventricular contractility, afterload, and preload. Preload is related to end-diastolic volume (EDV) and pressure; the relationship between these 2 parameters (the end-diastolic pressurevolume relationship, EDPVR) indexes the degree of ventricular remodeling. Although EF is known to correlate with mortality in the subset of heart failure patients with reduced EF, it is previously unknown which of its determining factors contribute most importantly to prognosis. In this issue of the Journal, Ky et al. (1) set out to address this fundamental question using pressure-volume (PV) analysis, the most powerful approach for addressing such a problem.

Further observations on respiratory flow-volume loops: clinical evaluation of a new oral bronchodilator, CP-12,521-1.

PRESSUBE, VOLUME, AND FLOW DATA obtained during spirometry and plotted as pressure-volume or flow-volume loops have been used in the study of respiratory mechanics. Pressure-volume loops are used for the display of data generated in the measurement of static and dynamic compliance of the lungs and/or chest wall. 1-~ Flow-volume loops have been used for the quick pattern-recognition of various p...

The use of left ventricular end-ejection pressure and peak pressure in the estimation of the end-systolic pressure-volume relationship.

The end-systolic pressure-volume relationship (ESPVR) as derived from left ventricular pressure-volume loops has gained increasing acceptance as an index of ventricular contractile function. In animal experiments the ESPVR has been defined as a line connecting the upper left corners of several differently loaded pressure-volume (P-V) loops with a slope parameter Ees and a volume axis intercept ...

Assessment of the immediate effects of cardiopulmonary bypass on left ventricular performance by on-line pressure-area relations.

BACKGROUND Pressure-volume relations have been established as useful measures of left ventricular (LV) performance. Application of these methods to the intraoperative setting have been limited because of difficulties acquiring LV volume data. Transesophageal echocardiographic automated border detection can measure LV cross-sectional area as an index of volume, which can be coupled with pressure...

Assessment of right ventricular contractile state with the conductance catheter technique in the pig.

OBJECTIVE Since the conductance catheter method has facilitated evaluation of left ventricular contractile state in both laboratory and clinical studies, the aim of this study was to determine whether the technique is similarly useful for the right ventricle. METHODS A series of right ventricular pressure-volume loops was obtained in seven open chest pigs during transient vena caval occlusion...

Respiratory mechanics derived from signals in the ventilator circuit.

The aim of this article is to identify and interpret the data provided by modern ventilators that provide the greatest clinical help in evaluating respiratory mechanics during mechanical ventilation. In intensive care, respiratory mechanics can be assessed in dynamic conditions (no flow-interruption) or static conditions (occlusion techniques) to record compliance and resistance and to monitor ...
