The evolution of a nearshore coastal observatory and the establishment of the New Jersey Shelf Observing System

چکیده
" The very few existing time-series stations paint a compelling picture of important oceanic changes in physics, chemistry and biology. Yet these stations capture the time domain at only a single point. New strategies for observing the appropriate spatial correlation are required. " Ocean Sciences at the New Millennium, Ocean Sciences Decadal Committee 2001 Figure 1. The Coastal Ocean Observation Laboratory (COOL) is constructing the New Jersey Shelf Observing System (NJSOS) in the New York Bight. The goal is to provide a synoptic 3-D picture of the biogeochemical cycling elements on a broad continental shelf.

The New Jersey Shelf Observing System
Introduction The coastal ocean represents up to 30% of the total global ocean productivity and more than 90% of the world's fish catch (Holigan and Reiners, 1992). The coastal ocean also represents the major chemical-" filter " between the terrestrial and open oceans with the majority of the terrestrial inputs and biological productivity being remineralized on broad shelves with little export t...
متن کاملExploring a New Model of End-of-Life Care for Older People That Operates in the Space Between the Life World and the Healthcare System: A Qualitative Case Study
Background Innovative service models to facilitate end-of-life care for older people may be required to enable and bolster networks of care. The aim of this study was to understand how and why a new charitably funded service model of end-of-life care impacts upon the lives of older people. <span class="fon...
متن کاملLong term coastal erosion and shoreline positions of Sri Lanka
Coastal zone of Sri Lanka is a key to sustainable development of the country. The erosion of country’s coastal zone has been identified as a long standing problem. Therefore, coastal sediment dynamics around the country has to be identified to develop an appropriate coastal zone management plan. Remote sensing and GIS techniques can be used for quantitative and qualitative analyses of coastal p...
