Mapping Urban Area Extents with Terrasar-x Single- Polarization Images

چکیده
I – Introduction From the more structured urban areas in Europe and USA to the more chaotic Chinese, Asia’s and South America’s ones, from megalopolis to small and sparse settlements, the role of human settlements is becoming more and more important in land management, regional policy definition, and global modeling of environmental phenomena. The need for increased and more and more specific data sets led in the past to some examples of global urban extent data sets, but all of them have been extracted from optical or near infrared images [1-3]. This paper, stemming from project LAN008 approved after the TerraSAR-X AO, shows examples of urban area extents all over the world starting from VHR SAR images, allowing via a fast yet robust approach to provide in a quick way the global information needed by the above mentioned models, scientists and policy makers. So far, urban extent is the only reliable outcome of the process, but a few preliminary results of different and more refined land use mapping will be also presented in the result section.

DSMs GENERATION FROM TERRASAR-X HIGH RESOLUTION SPOTLIGHT IMAGERY: EVALUATION OF RADARGRAMMETRIC APPROACHES IMPLEMENTED IN THE SCIENTIFIC SOFTWARE SISAR
One relevant application of SAR remote sensing is the generation of Digital Surface Models (DSMs) of the Earth's surface, thanks to the SAR independence from logistic constraints on the ground, illumination and weather conditions. Starting from SAR imagery two different approaches can be used to generate DSMs: the well known interferometric and the promising radargrammetric one. The goal of thi...

State-of-the-art high resolution active remote sensing imaging radar, TerraSAR-X, is having all-weather and all-time data acquisition capability. It is a promising tool for mapping snow and glaciers in mountainous region. The current study has been done using dual polarization (HH/VV) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data of TerraSAR-X (TSX), to estimate the snow physical properties (snow cover, ...

The first German space mission TerraSAR-X was launched on June 15th, 2007. Within the TerraSAR-X science program of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Institute of Digital Image Processing of Joanneum Research (JRDIB) has gained a principal investigator status with respect to the assessment of the mapping potential of TerraSAR-X data using radargrammetric as well as interferometric techniqu...
متن کاملTerrasar X-band Insar Observations in Urban Areas
SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) has ability to detect subtle surface movement at the scale of millimeter to centimeter. TerraSAR-X is new radar satellite operated at X-band, multi polarization, and multi beam mode. Compared with C-band or L-band SAR, the X-band system inherently suffers from more temporal decorrelation due to short wavelength (3.1 cm), but is more sensitive to surface deformatio...
متن کاملMultitemporal Observations of Sugarcane by TerraSAR-X Images
The objective of this study is to investigate the potential of TerraSAR-X (X-band) in monitoring sugarcane growth on Reunion Island (located in the Indian Ocean). Multi-temporal TerraSAR data acquired at various incidence angles (17°, 31°, 37°, 47°, 58°) and polarizations (HH, HV, VV) were analyzed in order to study the behaviour of SAR (synthetic aperture radar) signal as a function of sugarca...
