چکیده

One hundred and twenty pigs were used to evaluate the effects of housing indoors on concrete slats or outside in dirt lots on tail biting, weight gains, behavior and immune function for pigs with intact tails or with tails docked. Pig performance was largely not influenced by treatments, even when cannibalism was found. When pigs began biting tails in particular pens, many pigs’ tails were not curled and up against their body. Cannibalism was found both in dirt lots and in confinement, however the incidence of cannibalism was greater among confined pigs. Some immune measures indicated pigs with tails (regardless of housing system) were immunosuppressed. At this time, pig well being is predicted to be the greatest if their tails are docked.

Effects of tail docking and teeth clipping on the physiological responses, wounds, behavior, growth, and backfat depth of pigs.

The objective of this experiment was to compare the effects of tail docking and teeth clipping on the growth and behavior of pigs. Pigs (n = 126) from 21 litters (6 pigs/litter) were blocked by birth weight, and assigned at 3 d of age within blocks to either teeth clipping and tail docking (processed) or control (sham-processed). Vocalizations of pigs were recorded during the procedures, and be...

Protecting pigs against themselves: Recent advances in the control of cannibalism in intensive pig production

Pigs reared in intensive production systems often express abnormal cannibalistic behaviours, such as tail biting (Schroder-Peterson & Simonsen, 2001). The occurrence of tail biting is difficult to predict but is believed to arise from several complex factors, particularly lack of environmental enrichment as well as inadequate food intake (Moinard et al., 2002; EFSA, 2007). The presence of canni...

Effect of Fat-Tail Docking on the Reproductive Performance in Ghezel and Mehraban Sheep

78 Ghezel and 76 Mehraban sheep were used to evaluate the effect of fat-tail docking on reproductive performance. Within two days after birth the tails of 32 Ghezel female lambs and 28 Mehraban female lambs were docked using a tight rubber ring. The lambs were allowed to reproduce for three lambing opportunities and their reproductive performances were evaluated. The effect of docking on the fe...

Correlation Effects of Nano Selenium and Conjugated Linoleic Acid on the Performance, Lipid Metabolism and Immune System of Male Moghani Lambs

This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of nano selenium (nano-Se) and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on performance, biometric and blood parametersand selenoprotein W1 (SEPW1) and lipid gene expression in male Moghani lambs. Thirty male Moghani lambs, 3-months-old and weighing 30 ± 0.25 kg, were used in completely randomized design in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement with dietary suppl...

Save the pig tail

Tail biting is a common problem in modern pig production and has a negative impact on both animal welfare and economic result of the farm. Tail biting risk is increased by management and housing practices that fail to meet the basic needs of pigs. Tail docking is commonly used to reduce the risk of tail biting, but tail docking in itself is a welfare problem, as it causes pain to the pigs, and ...
