Cell Size: Chromosomes Get Slapped by a Midzone Ruler
نویسندگان
چکیده
Spatial and temporal coordination of mitotic events has been generally attributed to the coincidental outcome of increasing cyclin-dependent kinase activity. A recent study reports that mitotic events and structures previously considered to be independently controlled are capable of trans-regulation to ensure genomic integrity.

JCB • VOLUME 173 • NUMBER 3 • 2006 316 C aren Norden, Manuel Mendoza, Yves Barral (ETH, Zurich, Switzerland), and colleagues have found a new checkpoint in yeast cell division. Cytokinesis, they show, is delayed until chromosomes are out of the way, thanks to a pathway that monitors the spindle midzone. If cytokinesis were to occur too soon, chromatids still lingering in the spindle midzone mig...
متن کاملA Minimal Midzone Protein Module Controls Formation and Length of Antiparallel Microtubule Overlaps
During cell division, microtubules are arranged in a large bipolar structure, the mitotic spindle, to segregate the duplicated chromosomes. Antiparallel microtubule overlaps in the spindle center are essential for establishing bipolarity and maintaining spindle stability throughout mitosis. In anaphase, this antiparallel microtubule array is tightly bundled forming the midzone, which serves as ...
متن کاملThe survivin-like C. elegans BIR-1 protein acts with the Aurora-like kinase AIR-2 to affect chromosomes and the spindle midzone.
Baculoviral IAP repeat proteins (BIRPs) may affect cell death, cell division, and tumorigenesis. The C. elegans BIRP BIR-1 was localized to chromosomes and to the spindle midzone. Embryos and fertilized oocytes lacking BIR-1 had defects in chromosome behavior, spindle midzone formation, and cytokinesis. We observed indistinguishable defects in fertilized oocytes and embryos lacking the Aurora-l...
متن کاملMarking and Measuring Single Microtubules by PRC1 and Kinesin-4
Error-free cell division depends on the assembly of the spindle midzone, a specialized array of overlapping microtubules that emerges between segregating chromosomes during anaphase. The molecular mechanisms by which a subset of dynamic microtubules from the metaphase spindle are selected and organized into a stable midzone array are poorly understood. Here, we show using in vitro reconstitutio...
متن کاملThe role of centromere-binding factor 3 (CBF3) in spindle stability, cytokinesis, and kinetochore attachment.
The spindle midzone is critical for spindle stability and cytokinesis. Chromosomal passenger proteins relocalize from chromosomes to the spindle midzone after anaphase onset. The recent localization of the inner-kinetochore, centromere-binding factor 3 (CBF3) complex to the spindle midzone in budding yeast has led to the discovery of novel functions for this complex in addition to its essential...
