THE ISTHMUS OF PANAMA IN ITS RELATION TO THE ANIMAL LIFE OF NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA' IT is a commonplace of geological teaching that the past can be understood only through a knowledge of the present and it is equally true that the present can be fully comprehended only through a knowledge of the past. Each must be employed to elucidate the other and we must pass from one to the other, as new discoveries are made in either realmn. The problems which deal with the existing geographical distribution of animals have received much light from the progress of paleontological discovery and the present arrangement is clearly seen to be the necessary outcome of an illimitable series of past changes, climatic, geographical and biological. Even in preDarwinian days the geographical distribution of animals had been given much attention, as a collection of interesting facts, though, under the belief in special creation then prevailing, no explanation of those facts was possible. The general adoption of Darwin's views immediately placed the subject in a new light, for it was at once seen that, unless the theory of evolution could offer a rational and satisfactory solution of these problems of distribution, the foundations of the theory would be greatly weakened. No result of paleontological studies has, of late years, been more striking than the clear recognition of the fact that migra-

Testing geological models of evolution of the Isthmus of Panama in a phylogenetic framework

The emergence and closure of the Isthmus of Panama had regional and global impacts that were rivalled by few other Cenozoic geological events. The closure of the Central American Seaway and the rise of the Isthmus had dramatic affects on climate and air and oceanic currents worldwide. Formation of the Isthmus also drove terrestrial biotic interchange, ending the isolation of South America by pe...

Fracturing of the Panamanian Isthmus during initial collision with South

Tectonic collision between South America and Panama began at 23–25 Ma. The collision is signifi cant because it ultimately led to development of the Panamanian Isthmus, which in turn had wide-ranging oceanic, climatic, biologic, and tectonic implications. Within the Panama Canal Zone, volcanic activity transitioned from hydrous mantle-wedge−derived arc magmatism to localized extensional arc mag...

Domestication of the neotropical tree Chrysophyllum cainito from a geographically limited yet genetically diverse gene pool in Panama

Species in the early stages of domestication, in which wild and cultivated forms co-occur, provide important opportunities to develop and test hypotheses about the origins of crop species. Chrysophyllum cainito (Sapotaceae), the star apple or caimito, is a semidomesticated tree widely cultivated for its edible fruits; it is known to be native to the neotropics, but its precise geographic origin...

Historical biogeography of the Isthmus of Panama.

About 3 million years ago (Ma), the Isthmus of Panama joined the Americas, forming a land bridge over which inhabitants of each America invaded the other-the Great American Biotic Interchange. These invasions transformed land ecosystems in South and Middle America. Humans invading from Asia over 12000 years ago killed most mammals over 44 kg, again transforming tropical American ecosystems. As ...

Correction for Bacon et al., Biological evidence supports an early and complex emergence of the Isthmus of Panama.

The linking of North and South America by the Isthmus of Panama had major impacts on global climate, oceanic and atmospheric currents, and biodiversity, yet the timing of this critical event remains contentious. The Isthmus is traditionally understood to have fully closed by ca. 3.5 million years ago (Ma), and this date has been used as a benchmark for oceanographic, climatic, and evolutionary ...
