چکیده

We have measured 21-cm absorption spectra in the direction of three southern pulsars, PSRs B0736–40, B1451–68 and B1641–45, in three separate epochs spread over 2.5 yr. We see no evidence for any changes in the absorption spectra over this time span in spite of good velocity resolution and sensitivity. Towards PSR B1641–45 we place an upper limit of 10 cm on the change in the column density of the cold, neutral gas. In addition, we observed PSR B1557–50 and compared its H i absorption spectrum with spectra taken in 1980 and 1994. A prominent deep absorption feature seen at –110 km s in 1994 is weaker in 2000 and likely was not present at all in 1980. Using the standard interpretation which links the distance traversed by the pulsar to a physical cloud size, this results in a cloud size of ∼1000 AU and density of 2 × 10 cm, parameters typical of those seen in other observations. These results are also consistent with an alternative model by Deshpande (2000) who expects the largest variations in optical depth to be seen against the longest time intervals.

H i line measurements of pulsars towards the Galactic Centre and the electron density in the inner Galaxy

We have measured 21-cm absorption and emission spectra in the direction of a further 7 southern pulsars with the Parkes telescope to derive their kinematic distances and to study the interstellar medium. For the first time we have successfully obtained H i absorption measurements for PSRs J1602–5100, J1740–3015 and J1745–3040. We have also significantly improved the sensitivity and resolution o...

Does Tiny-scale Atomic Structure Exist in the Interstellar Medium ?

We report on preliminary results from the recent multi-epoch neutral hydrogen absorption measurements toward three pulsars, B0823+26, B1133+16 and B2016+28, using the Arecibo telescope. We do not find significant variations in optical depth profiles over periods of 0.3 and 9–10 yr, or on spatial scales of 10–20 and 70–85 AU. The large number of non detections of the tiny scale atomic structure ...

Ju n 20 03 The tiny - scale atomic structure : gas cloudlets or scintillation phenomenon ?

We present here preliminary results from the recent multi-epoch HI absorption measurements toward several pulsars using the Arecibo telescope. We do not find significant variations in optical depth profiles over periods of 4 months and 9 years. The upper limits on the optical depth variations in directions of B0823+26 and B1133+16 are similar on scales of 10–20, 350 and 500 AU. The large number...

Separated at Birth: the Origin of the Pulsars B2020+28 and B2021+51 in the Cygnus Superbubble

High precision astrometric data have enabled us to determine the trajectories through the Galactic potential for a growing number of pulsars. This has resulted in the discovery of a pulsar pair (B2020+28 and B2021+51) that has a common origin in the Cygnus Superbubble or in one of its related OB associations at an epoch which is comparable with the spin-down ages of the pulsars. Analysis of the...

Design for Affordability in Complex Systems and Programs Using Tradespace-based Affordability Analysis

With growing emphasis on affordability, the conceptual design of complex systems and programs is no longer confined to maximizing technical performance, but also to minimizing cost and schedule related attributes. By defining affordability as the property of becoming or remaining feasible relative to resource needs and resource constraints over time, Multi-Attribute Tradespace Exploration and E...
