Odd Cravings, Appetite, Hunger, and Thirst
نویسنده
چکیده
Cravings for food as appetite and hunger is a healthy reflex reaction to the body’s need for nutriment, just as thirst is the subjective physiological reaction to dehydration. Hypothalamic neuro-peptides released in response to nutritional demands affect brain circuits driving hunger. Unusual cravings for non-nutritive foods or uncontrollable desires for odd choices or combinations of food may manifest during different altered physiological states. Cissa or cittosis is a craving for strange unusual, sometimes unwholesome, foods often encountered during pregnancy. Pica is a depraved or perverted appetite with hunger for non-nutritive substances not fit for food. Pica and cissa may occur separately, simultaneously or asynchronously. This article appraises odd cravings occasioned by picca and cittosis, related physiology of thirst and hunger, some dysfunctions of these, and defines distinctions between physiological demands for nourishment and the discussed cravings.

Development of an ecological momentary assessment scale for appetite
BACKGROUND An understanding of eating behaviors is an important element of health education and treatment in clinical populations. To understand the biopsychosocial profile of eating behaviors in an ecologically valid way, ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is appropriate because its use is able to overcome the recall bias in patient-reported outcomes (PROs). As appetite is a key PRO associa...
متن کاملFTO genotype, dietary protein, and change in appetite: the Preventing Overweight Using Novel Dietary Strategies trial.
BACKGROUND A common obesity-risk variant rs9939609 in the fat mass- and obesity-associated (FTO) gene was recently shown to affect appetite, and the gene is sensitive to the regulation of amino acids. OBJECTIVE We examined the interaction between FTO genotype and protein intake on the long-term changes in appetite in a randomized controlled trial. DESIGN We genotyped FTO rs9939609 in 737 ov...

AIM The aim of this trial was to investigate the mechanism of action for body weight loss with semaglutide. MATERIALS AND METHODS This randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, two-period crossover trial investigated the effects of 12 weeks of treatment with once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide, dose-escalated to 1.0 mg, in 30 subjects with obesity. Ad libitum energy intake, ratings of ap...
متن کاملConsumption of thylakoid-rich spinach extract reduces hunger, increases satiety and reduces cravings for palatable food in overweight women
Green-plant membranes, thylakoids, have previously been found to increase postprandial release of the satiety hormone GLP-1, implicated in reward signaling. The purpose of this study was to investigate how treatment with a single dose of thylakoids before breakfast affects homeostatic as well as hedonic hunger, measured as wanting and liking for palatable food (VAS). We also examined whether tr...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Prevalence of adolescent obesity has increased worldwide. Although diet and exercise patterns are major determinants of weight, recent studies with adults and children have shown that total amount of sleep is inversely associated with body mass index (BMI). The purpose of this study was to examine associations among total sleep time (TST), hunger, satiety, food cravings, ...
