Major Soil Classes of the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba (PR), Brazil: I - Mineralogical Characterization of the Sand, Silt and Clay Fractions
نویسندگان
چکیده
The aim of this work was to evaluate the mineralogical and chemical characteristics of most representative soils of the Region of Curitiba, Paraná State. Samples were collected at different depths. The results showed: (a) the quartz was the only identified mineral at the silt and sand fractions. The dominant clay mineral was Kaolinite, with contents ranging from 676.7 to 820.8 g kg. The gibbsite was also an important constituent of the most weathered horizons and the hematite and goethite contents were low, mainly in the Histosol; (b) at the C horizon of the Inceptisol, high intensity of vermiculite/smectite reflections were detected (X-ray diffraction), justifying the high capacity of expansion and contraction, normally showed for this soil horizon; (c) was observed a good relation between pedogenetic degree and crystallographic mineral characteristics.

Grain size and mineralogical studies of sandy sediments in southwestern Iran
The objectives of this study were to determine the nature (aeolian vs. alluvial) and origin of sandy sediments in southwestern Iran (Khuzestan province) were collected in two transects across (NW-SE directions) and perpendicular to the Karkheh River, by using grain sized distribution characteristics, and the mineralogy and micro-texture of quartz grains of forty-five surface samples (0-30cm) at...
متن کاملEffect of bovine manure on fecal coliform attachment to soil and soil particles of different sizes.
Manure-borne bacteria can be transported in runoff as free cells, cells attached to soil particles, and cells attached to manure particles. The objectives of this work were to compare the attachment of fecal coliforms (FC) to different soils and soil fractions and to assess the effect of bovine manure on FC attachment to soil and soil fractions. Three sand fractions of different sizes, the silt...
متن کاملEstimating the parameters of Philip infiltration equation using artificial neural network
Infiltration rate is one of the most important parameters used in irrigation water management. Direct measurement of infiltration process is laborious, time consuming and expensive. Therefore, in this study application of some indirect methods such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) for prediction of this phenomenon was investigated. Different ANNs structures including two training algorithms...

Organic carbon pools and carbon lability directly affect soil biological, physical and chemical characteristics. Besides, capacity of self-organization of soil is related to the organic carbon pools. Sand size fraction (> 50 µm) organic matter is more labile than silt+clay size fraction organic matter. Assessment of this organic carbon variation can be a suitable index to determine soil quality...
متن کاملHow do changes in bulk soil organic carbon content affect carbon concentrations in individual soil particle fractions?
We test the common assumption that organic carbon (OC) storage occurs on sand-sized soil particles only after the OC storage capacity on silt- and clay-sized particles is saturated. Soil samples from a Brookston clay loam in Southwestern Ontario were analysed for the OC concentrations in bulk soil, and on the clay (<2 μm), silt (2-53 μm) and sand (53-2000 μm) particle size fractions. The OC con...
