Experimental Bacteremia in Normal and Irradiated Rats †

چکیده
A common finding in animals which have suffered severe radiation injury is invasion of the blood stream by bacilli normally found in the intestinal tract.' Accordingly, it is generally conceded that one of the significant aspects of such injury is weakening of the normal barrier which prevents the development of infection by micro-organisms that ordinarily exist harmlessly in the bowel. This bacteremia could be due to one or more of the following: (i) continuous passage of large numbers of bacteria from the bowel into the blood stream, (ii) impaired function of the mechanism which normally effects the removal of bacteria from the circulation, or (iii) escape of a few organisms from the bowel with establishment of infection in other parts of the body and bacteremia as a result of that infection. We are reporting the results of experiments which have a bearing on this subject.

Background and purpose: Bacteremia is one of the most common infective diseases. Rapid diagnosis of bacteremia might have great effect on the treatment of the disease and could result in a successful treatment by selecting effective antibiotics. Bacteremia due to Enterococcus faecalis is more common in hospitals and resistant strains are the main causes. Routine method using for diagnosis of ba...
متن کاملIn Vitro and in Vivo studies of the Effects of Cold Argon Plasma on Decreasing the Coagulation Time
Introduction Cold plasma is a self-sterilized, painless, and non-contact method in surgeries. These properties allow it to be applied to the living tissues and heat-sensitive parts. The aim of this study was to design a new cold plasma producer device and evaluate the effects of cold argon plasma on decreasing the coagulation time of blood drop in vitro and that of the injured liver blood in vi...
متن کاملGraft-versus-host disease in cyclosporin A-treated rats after syngeneic and autologous bone marrow reconstitution
Lethally irradiated rats treated with cyclosporin A (CsA) for 20-40 d develop classic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) when reconstituted with syngeneic or autologous bone marrow, upon discontinuation of CsA, whereas normal rats do not. Syngeneic GVHD may be transferred to irradiated but not normal syngeneic recipients. Normal spleen cells fail to prevent the development or adoptive transfer of...
متن کاملDorsal-ventral differences in the glia limitans of the spinal cord: an ultrastructural study in developing normal and irradiated rats.
The dorsal and ventral surfaces of the lumbosacral spinal cord were examined in normal and irradiated postnatal rats. In normal rats between three and 13 days postnatal (DP), the glia limitans (GL) of the ventral surface was a more complex structure than the dorsal GL. This greater degree of complexity was manifested in a greater number of subpial astrocytes, a greater number of radial glial pr...
متن کاملThe Effect of Ionizing Radiation on Phagocytosis and the Bactericidal Power of the Blood
Rats irradiated with 600 r (total body) showed increased indices of both opsonophagic and surface phagocytosis 2, 12, and 24 hours after irradiation. The indices decreased 72 hours after exposure and returned to normal by the 4th to 5th postirradiation day. Bactericidal power of the blood of irradiated animals was depressed when measured 3 and 6 days after exposure to x-rays. Decomplemented ser...
