Neutrino Cross Sections at HERA and Beyond

چکیده

The sources of very high energy cosmic rays should also be sources of neutrinos. While the complete scheme of ultrahigh energy cosmic ray production is not yet understood [1], ancillary to cosmic ray production are neutrino fluxes, both at the source of the cosmic rays and through cosmic ray propagation and scattering with the microwave background. Given that neutrinos are unabsorbed and undeflected between their sources and the Earth, neutrino telescopes may yield results that allow for a better understanding of cosmic ray production [2]. The neutrinonucleon cross section is a key ingredient in neutrino telescope measurements. The theoretical predictions of ultrahigh energy neutrino cross sections have been greatly influenced by the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) results of HERA experiments, starting in 1992. Neutrino cross sections were not measured at HERA, where beams of electrons and positrons are incident on proton beams, however, our knowledge of parton distribution functions has been dramatically improved with HERA results. At an energy equivalent to a neutrino energy of 54 TeV, the HERA results have aided our understanding of the parton distribution functions in new kinematic regimes and have led to different high energy extrapolations of the ultrahigh energy neutrino cross section than what was done earlier.

Ultrahigh energy neutrino scattering: an update

We update our estimates of charged and neutral current neutrino total cross sections on isoscalar nucleons at ultrahigh energies using a global (x, Q) fit, motivated by the Froissart bound [1], to the F2 (electron-proton) structure function utilizing the most recent analysis [2] of the complete ZEUS and H1 data sets from HERA I. Using the large Q, small Bjorken-x limits of the “wee” parton mode...

Dynamical QCD Predictions for Ultrahigh Energy Neutrino Cross Sections

Neutrino-nucleon total cross sections for neutrino energies up to ultrahigh energies (UHE), Eν = 10 12 GeV, are evaluated within the framework of the dynamical (radiative) parton model. The expected uncertainties of these predictions do not exceed the level of about 20 % at the highest energies where contributions of parton distributions in the yet unmeasured region around x ≃ 10 to 10 are non-...

Detecting Neutrinos from AGN: New Fluxes and Cross Sections

New information on the structure of the nucleon from the HERA ep collider leads to higher neutrino cross sections for the processes νμ(ν̄μ) +N → μ (μ) +X needed to calculate the expected rates of astrophysical neutrino induced muons in large detectors either under construction, or in the design stage. These higher cross sections lead to higher muon rates for arrival angles where neutrino attenua...

Heavy Quark Production in the Semihard Qcd Approach at Hera and Beyond

The experimental results on bb̄−pair production cross sections obtained by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at HERA and D0 and CDF Collaborations at TEVATRON provide a strong impetus for further theoretical studies. Comparisons of these results with NLO pQCD calculations show that they underestimate the cross sections at HERA and TEVATRON energies. Therefore, it looks certainly reasonable to try a...

New Probes for Extended Gauge Structures at HERA

Doncheski and Hewett have recently shown that the ratio of neutral current to charged current cross sections, R = σNC/σCC , can provide a more sensitive probe for the existence of heavy leptoquarks at HERA than the usual proceedure which makes use of neutral current asymmetries. The apparent reason for this is that the Standard Model expectations for both of these cross sections are modified by...
