Metamodeling for High Dimensional Simulation-based Design Problems Songqing Shan Dept. of Mech. and Manuf. Engineering University of Manitoba Winnipeg, MB, Canada R3T 5V6 [email protected] G. Gary Wang School of Engineering Science Simon Fraser University Surrey, BC, Canada V3T 0A3 [email protected] Abstract Computational tools such as finite element analysis and simulation are widely used in engineering. But they are mostly used for design analysis and validation. If these tools can be integrated for design optimization, it will undoubtedly enhance a manufacturer’s competitiveness. Such integration, however, faces three main challenges: 1) high computational expense of simulation, 2) the simulation process being a black-box function, and 3) design problems being high dimensional. In the past two decades, metamodeling has been intensively developed to deal with expensive black-box functions, and has achieved success for low dimensional design problems. But when high dimensionality is also present in design, which is often found in practice, there lacks of a practical method to deal with the so-called Highdimensional, Expensive, and Black-box (HEB) problems. This paper proposes the first metamodel of its kind to tackle the HEB problem. This work integrates Radial Basis Function (RBF) with High Dimensional Model Representation (HDMR) into a new model, RBF-HDMR. The developed RBF-HDMR model offers an explicit function expression, and can reveal the 1) contribution of each design variable, 2) inherent linearity/nonlinearity with respect to input variables, and 3) correlation relationships among input variables. An accompanying algorithm to construct the RBF-HDMR has also been developed. The model and the algorithm fundamentally

Towards an Adaptive and Flexible Metamodeling Toolbox

In the process of designing and understanding complex electrical, mechanical, structural, biological, economic and social systems metamodeling techniques have become indispensable. Due to the increasing computational complexity of current simulation codes multivariate approximation models (polynomials, Artificial Neural Networks, Support Vector Machines, ...) are often used to gain insight into...

Comparative Studies of Metamodeling Techniques Under Multiple Modeling Criteria

Despite advances in computer capacity, the enormous computational cost of running complex engineering simulations makes it impractical to rely exclusively on simulation for the purpose of design optimization. To cut down the cost, surrogate models, also known as metamodels, are constructed from and then used in place of the actual simulation models. In the paper, we systematically compare four ...

Towards simultaneous reduction of both input and output spaces for interactive simulation-based structural design

Engineering design problems generally involve a high-dimensional input space of design variables yielding an output space by means of costly high-fidelity evaluations. In order to decrease the overall cost, reducedorder models for the output space such as Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD) are an active area of research. However, little research has...

An Improved N-dimensional NURBs-based Metamodel

Non Uniform Rational B-splines (NURBs) are proved to be very promising for metamodeling in engineering problems, because they have unique properties such as local modification scheme, strong convex hull property, and infinitely differentiability, etc. Since NURBs are defined by control points, knot vector, and weights associated with control points, the precision of NURBs is influenced by all o...

Adaptive Global Metamodeling with Neural Networks

Due to the scale and computational complexity of current simulation codes, metamodels (or surrogate models) have become indispensable tools for exploring and understanding the design space. Consequently, there is great interest in techniques that facilitate the construction and evaluation of such approximation models while minimizing the computational cost and maximizing metamodel accuracy. Thi...
