A Note on the Therapeutic Efficiency of Soluseptasine in Simian Malaria (P. Knowlesi)

چکیده
While discussing with the writers the problem of treatment of leptospiral infection by synthetic drugs, Mr. Harold Walker, representative of Messrs. May and Baker, Ltd., suggested that the effectiveness of soluseptasine, which like other compounds of the sulphonamide group has earned a great reputation for its bactericidal properties, particularly in streptococcal infections, might be tested on this infection as well. Soluseptasine is a white crystalline powder of welldefined chemical constitution. The chemical formula is as follows:?

Knowlesi malaria: newly emergent and of public health importance?
Several questions on public health impact have arisen from the discovery of a large focus of the simian malaria parasite, Plasmodium knowlesi, in the human population. P. knowlesi malaria is not newly emergent and was overlooked until molecular tools to distinguish between P. knowlesi and the morphologically similar Plasmodium malariae became available. Knowlesi malaria is a zoonosis that is wi...
متن کاملPlasmodium knowlesi malaria in Malaysia.
Plasmodium knowlesi, a simian malaria parasite, is now recognised as the fifth cause of human malaria and can lead to fatal infections in humans. Knowlesi malaria cases are widely distributed in East and West Malaysia and account for more than 50% of admissions for malaria in certain hospitals in the state of Sarawak. This paper will begin with a description of the early studies on P. knowlesi,...
متن کاملAdaptation of the genetically tractable malaria pathogen Plasmodium knowlesi to continuous culture in human erythrocytes.
Research into the aetiological agent of the most widespread form of severe malaria, Plasmodium falciparum, has benefitted enormously from the ability to culture and genetically manipulate blood-stage forms of the parasite in vitro. However, most malaria outside Africa is caused by a distinct Plasmodium species, Plasmodium vivax, and it has become increasingly apparent that zoonotic infection by...
متن کاملMethods for Detection and Identification of Plasmodium knowlesi: A Review Article
Background: Plasmodium knowlesi is a simian malaria parasite capable of causing malaria in human. Naturally acquired human infections with P. knowlesi have been detected in many South East Asian countries. As P. knowlesi can cause severe malaria with life threatening complications, early detection is of great importance in management of knowlesi malaria. Objective: To provide insight into the d...
متن کاملPhylogenetic analysis of simian Plasmodium spp. infecting Anopheles balabacensis Baisas in Sabah, Malaysia
BACKGROUND Anopheles balabacensis of the Leucospyrus group has been confirmed as the primary knowlesi malaria vector in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo for some time now. Presently, knowlesi malaria is the only zoonotic simian malaria in Malaysia with a high prevalence recorded in the states of Sabah and Sarawak. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Anopheles spp. were sampled using human landing catch (HL...
