Patterns of hydrogen bonding in water and ice

چکیده

The six-vertex lattice model is augmented with ionic vertices and bonding defects. These represent sources and sinks for hydrogen atoms, and the extra vertices account for the pH of water. This 14-vertex lattice model with Bjerrum bond defects represents a not unrealistic model of ice, and possibly also of structured water next to a surface. Such surfaces polarise the adjacent molecules, which greatly restricts the possible patterns of hydrogen bonds. The polarisation is screened by the defective vertices and bonds, which leads to a strong exponentially decaying repulsion between two similar surfaces. The model is solved in mean field approximation, and the relevance to the experimentally measured hydration forces is discussed.

Hydrogen bonding and the cryoprotective properties of glycerol/water mixtures.

Molecular dynamics simulations and infrared spectroscopy were used to determine the hydrogen bond patterns of glycerol and its mixtures with water. The ability of glycerol/water mixtures to inhibit ice crystallization is linked to the concentration of glycerol and the hydrogen bonding patterns formed by these solutions. At low glycerol concentrations, sufficient amounts of bulk-like water exist...

Two-dimensional interlocked pentagonal bilayer ice: how do water molecules form a hydrogen bonding network?

The plethora of ice structures observed both in bulk and under nanoscale confinement reflects the extraordinary ability of water molecules to form diverse forms of hydrogen bonding networks. An ideal hydrogen bonding network of water should satisfy three requirements: (1) four hydrogen bonds connected with every water molecule, (2) nearly linear hydrogen bonds, and (3) tetrahedral configuration...

Ice-nucleating bacteria control the order and dynamics of interfacial water

Ice-nucleating organisms play important roles in the environment. With their ability to induce ice formation at temperatures just below the ice melting point, bacteria such as Pseudomonas syringae attack plants through frost damage using specialized ice-nucleating proteins. Besides the impact on agriculture and microbial ecology, airborne P. syringae can affect atmospheric glaciation processes,...

In this paper, NMR and QTAIM analysis for three substituted of T2SA complex was investigated in the gas and four solvents at DFT level. Intermolecular O–H…N hydrogen bonds between 1,2,4,5-Tetrazine and Sulphurous acids enhance the stability of complex.1,2,4,5-Tetrazine is a highly reactive diene for [4+2] inverse-Diels–Alder cycloaddition processes and an excellent precursor to attain the pyrid...
