چکیده

A study has been made of the personality of 44 patients with chronic airways obstruction (using the Eysenck Personality Inventory), this being related to the difference between their observed Pvco(2) and that predicted from their F.E.V.(1). This was designed to test the hypothesis that those patients with a lower Pvco(2) than predicted were the more extravert. The results showed a significant correlation between extraversion and the departure of Pvco(2) from predicted Those patients having a lower Pvco(2) than predicted were more extravert than those with a Pvco(2) higher than predicted. There was no correlation between neuroticism and the Pvco(2).These results support the hypothesis that the personality of a patient may play an important part in determining the alveolar ventilation found in patients with chronic airways obstruction. Patients known as "pink puffers" could more appropriately be named "pugnacious pink puffers."

Resting ventilatory pattern, mouth occlusion pressure, and the effects of aminophylline in asthma and chronic airways obstruction.

Patients with obstruction of the airways can maintain normocapnia either by increasing the central inspiratory neuromuscular output or by altering the central timing of each breath. This point and the effects of administration of aminophylline on ventilatory regulation were studied in six normal subjects, seven asthmatic patients, and eight patients with unresponsive chronic obstruction of the ...

Gas exchange, expiratory flow obstruction and the clinical spectrum of asthma.

More than any other chronic respiratory disease, asthma is characterized by functional and clinical variability: expiratory flow obstruction, dyspnoea and wheezing may be absent, mild, or severe. Moreover, pulmonary gas exchange often does not closely relate to measured airway obstruction. Accordingly, the correlation between arterial oxygen tension and airflow (Pa,O2) rate indices of obstructi...

Endogenous opiates and the control of breathing in normal subjects and patients with chronic airflow obstruction.

To investigate the role of endorphins in central respiratory control, the effect of naloxone, a specific opiate antagonist, on resting ventilation and ventilatory control was investigated in a randomised double-blind, placebo-controlled study of normal subjects and patients with chronic airways obstruction and mild hypercapnia due to longstanding chronic bronchitis. In 13 normal subjects the ve...

Blood lactate and respiratory muscle fatigue in patients with chronic airways obstruction.

Blood lactate concentrations were measured in five patients with chronic airways obstruction after 10 minutes' sustained maximal voluntary ventilation (SMVV) with end-tidal carbon dioxide tension kept constant and after a 12-minute walk. No patient showed a significant rise in blood lactate after SMVV but all showed evidence of low-frequency fatigue of the sternomastoid muscle. After a 12-minut...

Computer analysis of ventilation-perfusion scans for detection and assessment of lung disease.

A previously reported computer analysis has been used to provide numerical ventilation-perfusion lung scan data, for comparison with tests of airways function and results of arterial blood gas analysis in 11 patients with pulmonary embolism, 18 with asthma, and 37 with chronic obstructive lung disease. In pulmonary embolism an index of underperfusion showed high sensitivity, and an index of ven...
