Studying Volcanic Plumbing Systems – Multidisciplinary Approaches to a Multifaceted Problem
نویسندگان
چکیده
Magma transport and storage beneath active volcanoes occurs in the so-called volcanic plumbing system (VPS), a network of different magmatic sheet intrusions and magma reservoirs. The complex physical and chemical processes, which occur in the volcanic plumbing system, are key parameters that control the occurrence of an eruption, as well as type and size of the eruption. It is therefore imperative to assess plumbing system processes and their dynamics. Traditionally, plumbing system research is done as a part of various scientific disciplines, each with its own research questions, methods, and terms. As a consequence, there is often little overlap and communication between the disciplines. In this chapter, we give an overview of the history of plumbing system research and outline the state of the art of the main scientific disciplines involved. We summarise the potential and limitations of each discipline and then discuss three key components to foster multidisciplinary research—namely communication, informa‐ tion, and education—which are essential to promote a better understanding of the complexity of volcanic plumbing systems.

Subvolcanic plumbing systems imaged through crystal size distributions
The confi guration of subvolcanic magma storage regions exercises a fundamental control on eruptive style and hazard. Such regions can be imaged remotely, using seismic, geodetic, or magnetotelluric methods, although these are far from routine and rarely unambiguous. The textures of erupted volcanic rocks, as quantifi ed through crystal size distributions (CSD), provide spaceand time-integrated...

Plate motion and associated tectonics explain the location of magmatic systems along plate boundaries [1], however, they cannot give satisfactory explanations of the origin of intra‐ plate volcanism. Intraplate magmatism such as that which created the Hawaiian Islands (Figure 1, hereafter for the location of geographical places the reader is referred to Figure 1) far from plate boundaries is co...
متن کاملAn introduction to magma dynamics
A variety of methods have been employed to decipher magmatic systems, including geophysical, petrological, textural and geochemical approaches, and these elucidate a large variety of characteristics of different plumbing systems and magmatic differentiation processes. A common theme to the papers presented in this book is the observation of transport of small volume magma batches with a relativ...
متن کاملMagma plumbing system and seismicity of an active mid-ocean ridge volcano
At mid-ocean ridges volcanism generally decreases with spreading rate but surprisingly massive volcanic centres occur at the slowest spreading ridges. These volcanoes can host unexpectedly strong earthquakes and vigorous, explosive submarine eruptions. Our understanding of the geodynamic processes forming these volcanic centres is still incomplete due to a lack of geophysical data and the diffi...
متن کاملModels for the Crustal Structure of Io: Implications for Magma Dynamics. W
Introduction: Io, the innermost of the Galilean satellites, is the most volcanically active body in our solar system. While its volcanic eruptions can be studied directly, our knowledge of the underlying magmatic processes rests wholly on indirect inferences. Here we combine constraints from magma ascent and crustal density models to gain insight into the plumbing system underlying the Promethe...
