Estimating Underwater Acoustical Parameters from Space-based Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery
نویسندگان
چکیده
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery from satellites provides a range of data products that can reveal certain aspects of the underwater acoustical environment. Space-based SAR imagery is available in all weather, day or night and has wide area coverage with swaths up to 500 km across. This availability and coverage gives SAR satellite data the potential to enhance acoustic environmental assessment for naval appl icat ions. Rapid processing and dissemination of SAR data has been demonstrated (Henschel, 1998) which further strengthens the case for operational use of spacebased SAR.

Underwater bottom topography may be visible on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images through the radar signature of ocean surface currents. Using SAR images and a limited number of echo soundings it is possible to constructs accurate depth maps, greatly reducing the costs of bathymetric surveying. Based on shallow water bathymetry synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging mechanism and the microwa...
متن کاملEstimating the Parameters of the K Distribution in the Intensity Domain
This paper reviews a number of different moment-based methods for estimating the parameters of the K distribution. The K distribution is a model for the statistics of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery that is formed from the product of two independent distributions, one representing the radar cross-section, and the other representing speckle that is a characteristic of coherent imaging. A ...

We consider the problem of estimating a parametric model that describes radar backscattering from synthetic aperture radar imagery. We adopt a scattering center model that incorporates both frequency and aspect dependence of scattering. We develop an approximate maximum likelihood algorithm for parameter estimation directly on regions of the SAR image. The algorithm autonomously selects model o...
متن کاملMoving target inference with hierarchical Bayesian models in synthetic aperture radar imagery
In synthetic aperture radar (SAR), images are formed by focusing the response of stationary objects to a single spatial location. On the other hand, moving targets cause phase errors in the standard formation of SAR images that cause displacement and defocusing effects. SAR imagery also contains significant sources of non-stationary spatially-varying noises, including antenna gain discrepancies...
متن کاملMinute Feature Analysis in Speckled Imagery
This paper tackles the problem of estimating the parameters of relevant distributions that describe speckled imagery. Speckle noise appears in data obtained with coherent illumination, as is the case of sonar, laser, ultrasound-B and synthetic aperture radar images. This noise is non-Gaussian and non-additive and, therefore, classical techniques of processing and analysis may fail. A universal ...
