چکیده

Data are analysed for 684 settlements in Ukraine and 458 settlements in Belarus. In each of the settlements more than 10 measurements of the I content in human thyroids had been performed in the period May/June 1986. Based on the measurement data, average thyroid doses due to the Chernobyl accident were assessed for every birth year in the birth-year cohort 1968-85. Census data from 1979 and 1989, and mortality rates in the period 1986-89 were used to derive the population structure in 1986. Case data were numbers of operations of pathologically confirmed thyroid cancers in the period 1986-2001 taken from registries that include the place of residence at the time of the accident. The excess absolute risk (EAR) per thyroid dose in all 1142 settlements is estimated for females to 3.1 (95% CI: 2.6; 3.6) cases per 10 PY-Gy, and for males to 2.4 (95% CI: 2.0; 2.8) cases per 10 PY-Gy. The excess relative risk (ERR) per dose is for females 7.2 (95% CI: 5.3; 9.1) Gy, and for males 42 (95% CI: 13; 71) Gy. The estimates for Ukraine are significantly lower than for Belarus (p < 0.007). The EAR per dose decreases with increasing age at exposure and increases with time after exposure. The ERR per dose decreases with time after exposure. The results agree within the confidence limits with excess risks that have been reported for external exposures during childhood.

Thyroid cancer incidence among people living in areas contaminated by radiation from the Chernobyl accident.

As a result of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, massive amounts of radioactive materials were released into the environment and large numbers of individuals living in Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine were exposed to radioactive iodines, primarily 131I. Iodine-131 concentrated in the thyroid gland of residents of the contaminated areas, with children and adolescents being particularly aff...

Thyroid cancer risk in areas of Ukraine and Belarus affected by the Chernobyl accident.

The purpose of the present study was to analyze the thyroid cancer incidence risk after the Chernobyl accident and its degree of dependence on time and age. Data were analyzed for 1034 settlements in Ukraine and Belarus, in which more than 10 measurements of the (131)I content in human thyroids had been performed in May/June 1986. Thyroid doses due to the Chernobyl accident were assessed for th...

Impact of Uncertainties in Exposure Assessment on Estimates of Thyroid Cancer Risk among Ukrainian Children and Adolescents Exposed from the Chernobyl Accident

The 1986 accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant remains the most serious nuclear accident in history, and excess thyroid cancers, particularly among those exposed to releases of iodine-131 remain the best-documented sequelae. Failure to take dose-measurement error into account can lead to bias in assessments of dose-response slope. Although risks in the Ukrainian-US thyroid screening stu...

Depression, Suicide Ideation, and Thyroid Tumors Among Ukrainian Adolescents Exposed as Children to Chernobyl Radiation

BACKGROUND The Chernobyl Childhood Illness Program (CCIP) was a humanitarian assistance effort funded by the United States Congress. Its purpose was to assist the Ukrainian Government to identify and treat adolescents who developed mental and physical problems following their exposure as young children to Chernobyl radiation. Thirteen years after the Chernobyl nuclear plant accident in 1986, th...

Recent Fukushima nuclear detonation, Chernobyl nuclear fallout, three mile island nuclear accident and atomic bomb explosion – rethinking the effects of nuclear radiations over human health

Background: The earlier Atomic Bomb explosion in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and three worth mentioning nuclear accidents - detonation at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, Chernobyl nuclear fallout and an accident at Three Mile Island nuclear power plant have made us more worried about the secure exploitation of nuclear energy. The central focus of this paper is to review radiation-mediated health e...
