On the regularity of maps solutions of optimal transportation problems

چکیده
We give a necessary and sufficient condition on the cost function so that the map solution of Monge’s optimal transportation problem is continuous for arbitrary smooth positive data. This condition was first introduced by Ma, Trudinger and Wang [17, 21] for a priori estimates of the corresponding Monge-Ampère equation. It is expressed by a socalled cost-sectional curvature being non-negative. We show that when the cost function is the squared distance of a Riemannian manifold, the cost-sectional curvature yields the sectional curvature. As a consequence, if the manifold does not have non-negative sectional curvature everywhere, the optimal transport map can not be continuous for arbitrary smooth positive data. The non-negativity of the cost-sectional curvature is shown to be equivalent to the connectedness of the contact set between any cost-convex function (the proper generalization of a convex function) and any of its supporting functions. When the cost-sectional curvature is uniformly positive, we obtain that optimal maps are continuous or Hölder continuous under quite weak assumptions on the data, compared to what is needed in the Euclidean case. This case includes the reflector antenna problem and the squared Riemannian distance on the sphere. Institut Camille Jordan, Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1

Continuity of maps solutions of optimal transportation problems
In this paper we investigate the continuity of maps solutions of optimal transportation problems. These maps are expressed through the gradient of a potential for which we establish C1 and C1,α regularity. Our results hold assuming a condition on the cost function (condition A3 below), that was the one used for C2 a priori estimates in [5]. The optimal potential will solve a Monge-Ampère equati...
متن کاملTwo Views on Optimal Transport and Its Numerical Solution
We present two insights into certain optimal transportation problems that are accompanied by new approaches to the numerical solution of these problems. First, we show that Monge’s optimal transport problem with quadratic cost can be reformulated as an infinite-dimensional convex optimization problem under certain conditions, most importantly that the target measure has a log-concave density. W...
متن کاملProfit intensity criterion for transportation problems
In this study criterion of maximum profit intensity for transportation problems, in contrast to the known criteria of minimum expenses or minimum time for transportation, is considered. This criterion synthesizes financial and time factors and has real economic sense. According to the purpose of this paper, the algorithm of the solution of such a transportation problem is constructed. It is sho...
متن کاملStability Results on the Smoothness of Optimal Transport Maps with General Costs
We prove some stability results concerning the smoothness of optimal transport maps with general cost functions. In particular, we show that the smoothness of optimal transport maps is an open condition with respect to the cost function and the densities. As a consequence, we obtain regularity for a large class of transport problems where the cost does not necessarily satisfy the MTW condition.
متن کاملPartial Regularity Results in Optimal Transportation
This note describes some recent results on the regularity of optimal transport maps. As we shall see, in general optimal maps are not globally smooth, but they are so outside a “singular set” of measure zero. 1.
