If a finite group G has a presentation with d generators and r relations, it is well-known that r−d is at least the rank of the Schur multiplier of G; a presentation is called efficient if equality holds. There is an analogous definition for proficient profinite presentations. We show that many perfect groups have proficient presentations. Moreover, we prove that infinitely many alternating groups, symmetric groups and their double covers have proficient presentations. Dedicated to the memory of Karl Gruenberg

We prove a game-theoretic version of Lévy’s zero-one law, and deduce several corollaries from it, including Kolmogorov’s zero-one law, the ergodicity of Bernoulli shifts, and a zero-one law for dependent trials. Our secondary goal is to explore the basic definitions of game-theoretic probability theory, with Lévy’s zero-one law serving a useful role.

In this paper some new cases of Knaster's problem on continuous maps from spheres are established. In particular, we consider an almost orbit of a p-torus X on the sphere, a continuous map f from the sphere to the real line or real plane, and show that X can be rotated so that f becomes constant on X.

In this paper we show that on a general hypersurface of degree r = 3, 4, 5, 6 in P 5 a rank 2 vector bundle E splits if and only if h 1 E(n) = h 2 E(n) = 0 for all n ∈ Z. Similar results for r = 1, 2 were obtained in [15], [16] and [1].
