Hemocompatibility of zwitterionic interfaces and membranes

چکیده
This focused review addresses the fundamental development of nonfouling zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (polySBMA) coatings on a wide range of interfaces and membranes in our laboratory for use in the development of hemocompatible medical devices. The molecular designs of zwitterionic interfaces (for example, surface packing density, grafting coverage, polymer chain conformation and chemistry) as well as the evolution of ‘intelligent’ interfaces are scrutinized and discussed. Correlations between polymeric membrane surface modification methods, such as thermaland plasma-induced polymerizations, the conformation of grafted polySBMA chains and hemocompatibility features, are also delineated. Effect of tryptophan insertions on the properties of the human group IIA phospholipase A2: mutagenesis produces an enzyme with characteristics similar to those of the human group V phospholipase A2.
An important characteristic of the human group IIA secreted phospholipase A(2) (IIA PLA(2)) is the extremely low activity of this enzyme with phosphatidylcholine (PC) vesicles, mammalian cell membranes, and serum lipoproteins. This characteristic is reflected in the lack of ability of this enzyme to bind productively to zwitterionic interfaces. Part of the molecular basis for this lack of activ...
متن کاملMultidentate zwitterionic chitosan oligosaccharide modified gold nanoparticles: stability, biocompatibility and cell interactions.
Surface engineering of nanoparticles plays an essential role in their colloidal stability, biocompatibility and interaction with biosystems. In this study, a novel multidentate zwitterionic biopolymer derivative is obtained from conjugating dithiolane lipoic acid and zwitterionic acryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine to the chitosan oligosaccharide backbone. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified by ...
متن کاملHemocompatibility and anaphylatoxin formation of protein-immobilizing polyacrylonitrile hemodialysis membrane.
Plasma proteins were covalently immobilized onto polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane to evaluate the hemocompatibility and anaphylatoxin formation. This is used as a model to study the effect of protein-adsorption on the blood-contacting response of hemodializing membranes. The proteins used were either platelet-adhesion-promoting collagen (COL) or platelet-adhesion-inhibiting human serum albumin ...
متن کاملChitosan-coated Cellulose/soy Protein Membranes with Improved Physical Properties and Hemocompatibility
A series of cellulose/soy protein membranes (CSM) was coated with chitosan to improve the mechanical properties, cytocompatibility, and hemocompatibility. The original CSM and chitosan-coated CSM (CH/CSM) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle testing, and tensile testing. CH/CSM had a smoother...

Asymmetric bi-soft segment poly(ester urethane urea) (PEUU) membranes containing polycaprolactone (PCL) as a second soft segment are synthesized with PCL-diol ranging from 0% to 15% (w/w). Bulk and surface characteristics of the PEUU membranes were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), static water contact angles, and surface streaming potentials and were correlated to hemocompati...
